What is a good password?

Adding to my previous discussion pertaining to how to remember all your passwords to the different accounts you have, I have added an extension to that discussion. What makes a good password? We have been told many times the strength of the password is determined by a good mixture of numerals and alphabets in it rather than having a password with all numbers or all words in it. Well sometimes for easy remembering we tend to choose the easy option eg using personal data such as birthdays, anniversaries, telephone numbers etc . So in your opinion what makes a good password?

The term their using now is passphrase. It's not a word anymore. It should be more that 8 characters and it should be a mixture of numbers, letters and special symbols. The longer your passphrase is the harder it is to break. For now it would be virtually impossible to break a 32 character passphrase. That is, if they don't find a backdoor to the program you are using to protect your work.

The usage of passphrase as you mentioned has indeed become increasingly popular mostly due to its efficiency of being a great way to prevent hackers from having the chance to try to break it. With symbols and numbers and alphabets all stringed together it does really increase the strength of the password. Thanks!

I have written some tips on how to have a strong passwords in one of my articles posted in the other sites. Here's a brief tips to it : 1. Passwords should contain five (5) letters. 2. Passwords should contain upper-case and lower-case letters. 3. Passwords should contain three (3) numbers. 4. Redundancy should be avoided.Example: C7iz5oL3 5. Do not replace letters by digits that look similar such as "i" with "1" or "7"; "o" or "O" with "0"; "g" or "G" with "6"; "s" or "S" with "5". Example: Floppy-disk - Fl0pPyd15k 6. Don't use any meaningful word you think is not in a dictionary, including slang, obscenity, technical terms or jargon. Examples: "poRsche914". 7. Don't use any common phrase Example: "Take3pay2". 8. Don't use simple patterns, including simple keyboard patterns or anything that someone can easily recognize if they see you typing it. Examples: "12qwASDF", "1q2W3E4r". 9. Don't use the name of any object that is in your field of vision at the workstation.

good password is that we use letters and numbers as well as certain symbols such as spaces or other signs with long digits, so that other people cannot open your password. Usually if we just put like a house number, date of birth, or else it would be easy other people to track it if not added a long sentence in behind or front letter or number.

hi luckymichelle! For me a good password should have a good mixture of alphabets and numbers. I also use "capslock" keys to make sure that the strength of my password is strong. I do avoid using my birthday information or personal information such as my name or surname as much as possible. I sometimes use a different and out of this world "words" which is hard to trace. The longer the better.

Hi Danitykane I agree personal information is really easily being sussed out. Yes using a password is good length is perhaps one method in which we can try to increase the strength of the password. Thanks again Danitykane =)

I think the best password is a sentence without space. The sentence must easy to remember. example: "Iwasbornon25january"(I was born on 25 january)or "myvehiclenumberisK2567D"(my vehicle number is K2567D).

Try your name backwards. It will take a bit of time to get use to it but i think its a nice way to keep the passwords safe.

This is a very good suggestion. I really learn a lot from mylot. Infact I feel a good password is a combination of alphabets as well as numeric.

A good password is something that's not easy for someone to guess but is still easy for you to remember. The only person who's ever been able to guess one of my passwords is my sister. Which probably means I need to change it. I typically use a combination of numbers at the end of a made-up word. I think it's a good idea to use a combination of numbers, letters, and if allowed other characters.

The password I chose.. Is totally random and is my "password" password. I would NEVER risk putting my birthday, social security number, or any word/number that actually has MEANING to me as my password - I just wouldn't feel secure about it. Instead, my passwords are all different totally random words (that have intrinsic meaning to me), mixed with numbers throughout the word, and sometimes weird punctunation like ! and .'s - if the site lets me.

Interesting Question! What I do is combine a memorable date for me, like the day I got a great promotion say May 10th, 1990 with the Company say Fidelity I worked for so that I might put in something - FideMay10lity - I'll remember the combination once I decide on it. I don't use Birthdays or dates like that, just dates that stand out in my mind for some special reason. And I sure as heck don't write them down! I also have many different passwords types and I group the password by the kind of site so I might have 1 password combo for news and information sites, 1 for household shopping sites, etc. I have 8 different password combinations which to some might be excessive but my identity was stolen online several years back. I am still occasionally running into issues from it. My bank and I had to work hard to untangle the mess and even with the bank's help, I still was out money. So I also now monitor all finances very regularly as the thief or thieves took advantage of a few weeks during which I had surgery and was recovering. Horrible surprise when I got back into my normal routine and found a financial nightmare. I also change my passwords every 4 months so a new combination type is chosen and onward it goes. Luckily for me, I do have an excellent memory so this system works for me! Be Well!

Some tips when I am thinking of a password is to always inlcude AT LEAST one number and a randomly placed capital letter somewhere in the password, somewhere that you would remember. People always try to capitalise the first letter, but they never think about the rest

A good password can be the name of the first crush or love in life. If no crush or love then make a word which is life's motto. For me: "no one can defeat me".

A good password would be a combination of numbers and letters because then no one would be able to guess your password. Also something that is not to short that is never a good idea.

a good password is that which is a combination of alphabets and numbers. if you want much stronger protection, you can use special characters too. a good password should be good to remember too. an easy way to give a good password is to combine some really memorable moments of life for example 199009tuesday, where 1990 is my birthday, 09 was my roll number at school and tuesday when i was born. ...and for all those who wonder if thats my real password, No its not :D :D

I agree that using something involving both numbers and letters will make for the best password, since it will be harder to guess. But make the password something that can be associated to you, so that you won't forget so easily what you made it.

a good password is a combination of all that you listed above and a little creativity. for example one of my passwords is the first initial of all of my kids in the order of their birth and then the first # in their birth month in that order. I might use the last 4 digits of my telephone # and the last 4 digits on my licence plate. I make sure to write everything down so that if I forget, I can look it up. Some are a combination of initals and ages.

For me, a good password is a combination of alphanumeric and has a combination of special characters. In that way it will be hard to track down those combinations by hackers.

A good password is when you use the maximum number of letters... The perfect pasword is like: 4E9z3n2 ...or something. letters and numbers which didn't mean nothing is best to use as a password. It's not good to use birthday numbers or something.... or meaning words.

A password can be of many types consisting of alphabets, numerals, alpha-numerics etc. But a good password is one which a person is able to remember and decode his documents at difficult times also. A good password helps a person enable to protect his documents from being hacked.

Hackproof passwords are not impossible to achieved, just make sure you get out of those hacker-friendly words like the usual abc's or 123's. Incorporate many characters in it like varied numbers, letters and other figures not so common in other passwords and be sure that its long up to the maximum limit.
