You are reading this, so thankfully you survived. What happened to you, just before you fell asleep behind the wheel? Were you alone? Was it at night? Did you do anything different after the incident occurred to keep it from happening again?

Sad to say but I have done this, much worse is that I'm driving a big bike, fortunately I gain my footing before the bike slips out of the road. That was certainly a wake up call, from then on I make is sure to get enough sleep before riding bike again especially in long trip. One of the common accidents happened on the road is this, driving and then falling asleep. Wake up and drive with full state of mind or you wont wake up instead.

.....Hi iceman23, First of all, let me say that I am very glad that you were able to wake up before you fully had a terrible accident, which could have injured you very badly. An accident on a bike makes you very vunerable. I was coming home one night a long time ago, and I was within about a mile of home, thought I could make it, knew I was sleepy. Kept driving, fell asleep, almost drove into a ditch. Woke up just before I was completely off the road. Would have needed a tow truck to get back on the road, had no cell phone and would have had to walk home. Lucky for me that I woke up. Good advice you give. Thanks for sharing, take care. Welcome to the ranch, enjoy.

This actually happened to me once in my younger days. I had left home in the wee hours of morning to pick up my girls from my parents. I preferred travelling when there was little or no traffic on the roads. I was about an hour from Mum and Dad's and I fell asleep and drifted off the side of the road and was instantly awake. I realised how tired I was and stayed there and went to sleep for about 20 minutes. I was fine then. I find myself having micro-sleeps on long journeys regardless of whether I have slept well the night before or not. Even if I pull over and close my eyes for 5 minutes I feel much better.

...Hi MsTickle, You were blessed or lucky that you woke up without too much harm. This happened to me as well, on my way home at night, a long time ago. I woke up before I ran into a ditch. The thing about is, you feel okay until you've gone to sleep. Then you realize too late, you were sleepier than you thought. It is good that you take short naps, so that you can keep going and be safe. Thanks so much for your response. Take care and happy Valentine's Day to you.
