Children's playground --- the streets!

There are certain places in our city where small houses are found very near the streets. I often see most children from these small houses playing on the side of the streets, sometimes even rendering vehicles to stay away from them or even hit their brakes to avoid running them over. Sometimes, they sell anything to motorists and stay or cross the streets to do their work. Do you find a similar situation where you live or in other areas that you have visited? If you lived in these areas, would you allow your children to play on the streets? Would you allow them to sell items on the street in order to help earn for the family?

I have a 7 month old baby girl, a 2 year old disabled boy and a 14 year old son. My teenager is too sensible to play in the road outside. My toddler isn't able to walk. In the warmer months of the year the boys in my neighborhood play out in the middle of the road. I live in a peaceful close. I think it is not wise for children to sell things to motorists and that type of thing doesn't happen in my locality. I like my children to play in parks and other areas where it is safe. My toddler son goes to a playgroup for disabled children. There is a stay and play session once a week and my baby girl goes to that too.

children - children in the side of a busy street. they are usually seen staying there most of the day.
Hi Maximax, Children in quieter areas have the opportunity and are allowed to play in the streets because not so many vehicles pass the area. This was where we played when I was small. We played in the middle of the national highway but in the past, there were very very few buses. Parks are better places for children to go running around. Those whom I see selling items in the streets are mostly from very poor families. They need to help the parents for their subsistence.

On our street, our neighbors and ourselves allow the children to play in the street. The reason that we allow them to play in the street is because we live on a court where the only traffic that we have is the neighbors or their guests. Everyone knows that there are a bunch of kids on the street. All of the neighbors are always watching out for the children. As far as allowing my children to sell something to try to support the family, I don't think that it should be a child's responsibility to help support their family.

Hi Dorannmwin, I wouldn't be risky or dangerous for your children and other children in the neighborhood to play in the street then because it is not usually used for the usual public traffic. In the province where I grew up, we were usually in the streets playing as the municipal plaza was too far from where our house was. It was the national highway where we played but buses were too scarce during that time. Children who are out in the streets selling wares are usually from the very poor families where they are allowed to help look for money for food, mainly.

Hi Gabs, It is the responsibility of every parent to ensure safety and to take care of their children. There are road accidents involving children. Most of these involve those who live in very crowded places or in squatter areas. There is no other place to play in their very small houses. Parents are so busy looking for money so they can eat and most of the times, children are neglected and left on their own.

Hi Laglen, I had played in the street when I was a child. We lived in the province and there are no buses nor cars at night when we usually play under the light of the moon. During daytime, we had several occasions where we play on the little streets which are not usually passed by buses or trucks. It is so much different in the city. It is dangerous for children playing on busy city streets.
