Have you ever applied for SSI?

I've applied for SSI due to disabilities that keep me from working at a stable, full-time job. I hear horror stories about denied claims and so I'm asking the life-experts here at MyLot for advice. If you've applied for SSI and won, would you share your hints and tips to a fellow Mylotter?

I've never applied for SSI, but I used to work in Social Services. It seems like a huge majority of the SSI applicants are denied and have to appeal. Even in the cases where it seems like someone clearly should have been approved.

*nod* That fits with the 'street wisdom' I've gathered -- expect to be denied the first time. Do you remember anything salient about those approved? Any commonalities?

There were lots of law firms that help with SSI appeals. It seemed whomever got lawyers always got approved.

My husband was denied because he did not have enough work credits in the last 10 years. So, find out how many credits that you have. His disability was approved, but he cannot receive benefits because he does not have the work credits they require.
