How can you book train ticket?

Here in the Netherlands you can use a public transport card given it is loaded with enough money. You can also buy a ticket on the station or on the internet or when you don't have to travel far, you can use a 'strippenkaart' a card with little boxes which have to be stamped according to how far you travel. But I don't know in your country. :D
