Can anyone advise me on how to prevent the tops of my cakes from cracking when I cook them?

Too much temperature could be one reason and so it too much mixing. I was once told that if you had butter in your cake, you should put a cooking pan with water in the oven while baking. This'll keep the cake not so dry and soft.

It used to happen to me when I put the cake in the pre-heated oven, when the temperature is too high, and perhaps, as someone above told you already, you use too much baking powder, you can try, measuring more carefully, and raising the heat more slowly

Perhaps you're mixing the batter to much. If the batter is really runny it breaks apart while cooking. Or it may be you pour to much into the pan and it rises higher than the pan.
