my older 2 children were about 4 months, but my youngest was 2 months,i had to ween him so early because he was on hungry baby milk at 4 weeks and he was still hungry, even though i was giving him a bottle every 2 hours,so i introduced him to half a rusk once a day, then half a rusk twice a day a week later

Every child is different but the general rule is to begin introducing solids when they start to show interest and when their swallow reflex has developed. You'll notice that really wee ones push out with their tongue? Your child has to be past that before they will figure out how to swallow from a spoon. You also want to be sure that they are holding their head up properly to avoid choking. Some people will advise you not to start solids before 6 months, others think earlier is okay. I trusted my instincts, paid attention to my daughter's development and started "solids" with her when she was 5 months. Start slow, we started with maybe a half teaspoon of very thin rice cereal. Baby will need a lot of practice feeding from a spoon and at first will wear most of the food! Ellyn Satter is the expert that I relied on for practical advice.

My 14 year old son began solid food at 4 months old due to health advice back in 1995. My 2 year old son began solid food at 6 months old. He is poor at eating. He drinks from a baby's bottle still. He is disabled with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. My baby girl began eating solid food at 6 months old. She is not enjoying it and today she hardly ate at all. She is now 7 months old. She eats vanilla soy pudding. Ideas of professionals change over the years. I know 6 months old it is suggested a mom can begin introducing solid food.
