Hey MyLotters!! Have any of you ever been involved in a car accident that might have involved the use of a cell phone?? They can be a distraction.... I see a lot of people that aren't driving very well and if I am able to actually see the driver, a lot of times they are on the phone. They might not use a signal because they are using their hand to hold the phone when the other hand is on the wheel...(hopefully) Any stories????

I know a lot of people who drive one-handed. Quite often my partner George has to do that very thing. The problem lies not so much with keeping both hands on the wheel, because those people who still have manual shifters have to take their hands off constently to shift, its the taking the eyes off the road. That's why more states ban texting while driving, more then they do talking on the phone and driving. While both could be considered" a distraction" texting causes someone to constently look at their phone to send/read incoming messages. Most would like all people to keep both hands on the wheel at all times, but there are other reasons why they don't. And, no I've never been in a car accident as a direct result of a cell phone. Nor, have I ever been in a car accident period.

Actually I don't and can't drive, but those I've ridden with haven't had any (at least while I was in with them). So that's always a plus I guess. So I can't complain, but people really do need to learn to be more careful on the roads. Quite frankly the laws just seem kind of pointless and stupid. I mean there are thousands of 'distractions" so why not ban them all? Why pick on cell phones or kids treveling with their friends?

Yes it's not watching the road more than anything else. I can't even imagin being able to text while I drive. When I heard of the new law, I was really surprised that people actually do that.... And, keep up the good driving! I haven't been involved in one in over 20 years....and they didn't even have cell phones back then!! Thanks for your response.

well in my country you can't use your phone while driving. I truely believe it's a bad habit, cause it's difficult to concentrate on both things and some accidents are really caused because of that.

Yes... I totally agree with you. They are a big distraction.

yeah I see a lot of drivers on mobiles ever though it is illegal here in england and quite rightly so. I have seen drivers moving across lanes or even driving at 15 mph as they were unaware of their speed as they were on their phones. Thankfully I have never been in an accident with someone on a mobile and I don't personally use my mobile in the car as I just think its crazy to do it. Though I also think that its not the talking on the phone that's the dangerous part as am sure we all sing to the radio when we are in the car, I think its the actual dialing the number and holding it to your ear thus taking your hand off the steering wheel thats the main problem with mobiles and driving.

Right! It's the dialing and answering the phone that make you look away.... Here, in Illinois, it's against the law to text while you drive and in my county, you can still legally talk on the phone while you drive. Other counties around me made it a law where you must have an ear piece....a "no hands" device so you can have both hands to drive.

of course! it cause any disasters, just thinking this: when you are driving, in this moment you receiveed a call, and when you looked the cell phone, you lost a few seconds that mean a lot to the other person who is driving like you, or u could go to another way and cause a disaster, killing people, or leaving with some problems. of course, its more dramatical saying like this manner, but its true. i think that is the same (not a disaster, but a huge loose) you are walking on the street,, texting someone, and when you are acrossing the street, you dont look at yourleft or right, and just in this second a car crashed you. i think that we must to use less the cellular on the street,, of course, exist some kidnappers or just robbers and caught your cell and pushed you to fall in the street. its an important think tthat we´ll must disattend.
