Why does a discussion disappear?

I've often wondered this. Sometimes I will see a discussion and can understand that it a violation of the guidelines, but then there are other times that a discussion is removed for no apparent reason? The reason I asked is because I started a discussion about how much water someone drinks in a day and there were lots of responses to it but when I went to answer some of them, the discussion was gone.

I was wondering that myself. I did not see anything offensive about your discussion. Actually I thought it was a great topic. I never thought of water being healthy and always wondered if I was drinking too much water. I drank 10-12 glasses a day.

Thank you. I didn't think that there was anything wrong with it and when I tried to look up the subject, it had been discussed 4 years ago and I thought that it would be okay to bring up the subject matter again.

I must also admit that the idea for the subject was born from another discussion that I had started.

randylovesdar, a post doesn't have to be offensive for it to be removed. It is a great topic, which is probably why it's done so many times.

There are thousands of discussions about the amount of water you drink. One of the lesser paid attention too guidelines is to make sure you search for similar discussions to the one you are about to post. I don't know if they catch or enforce that as often as always, but there is that, and a while back, it seemed everyday someone was talking about water. So that is something to be mindful of, sometimes it is tough because you want to get what is in your mind out to the world, but then it is already there. Cheers, I appreciate you.

I think that I am guilty of wanting to get what is on my mind as soon as it crosses my mind. It just surprised me that with as many responses as I'd received email notification on it was just gone.

It surprised me too, because I had it in a tab, when I saw it, but by the time I got to it, it wasn't there any more.

Yes, of course. I had that experience too, I didn't know why my discussion was deleted. But eventually, I know the reason: I misplaced it. I started it in the wrong interest. Haha! So you violated the guideline without knowing it. And I think the admin should tell the starter why their discussion got deleted.

Thank you Alice. I was a little bit confused about that myself.

I didn't know that inadvertantly placing a discussion in the wrong interest category would cause the discussion to be deleted.

Starting a discussion in the wrong interest does NOT result in the discussion being deleted.

Hi Dorann, I am suppose to respond on your discussion about water. when i am going to send my response--a prompt showed up and said it was deleted due to guideline violation. okay... i think there's someone who started the same discussion or similar to your topic that's why it was reported as a duplication or wahtever (i am just guessing about the reason...). i am aware of that particular discussion that you started.

It was a repeat discussion and I realize that now. I've learned a lot from this discussion that I will be able to keep in mind in the future.

I think that when we have a discussion that is deleted that we should be informed of why it was deleted simply because that way we will know for the next time.

Hi dorannmwin! There's a big difference between no "apparent" reason and no reason at all. To answer your broad question, discussions (and responses, comments, photos, etc.) disappear because in some way, shape, or form, they did not comply with the myLot discussion guidelines or Terms of Use. Posts are never deleted for no reason at all. No "apparent" reason, however, is they key in many cases. A very good example of this is plagiarism. Regarding your discussion on drinking water, I did comment above/on the previous page that I was able to find numerous discussions asking the myLot community how much water one consumes in a given day by searching for "drink" and "water" and I'm curious what words you used when you searched that you and I had such drastically different search results.

Thank you so much Alice for your time to clarify this for me. I realized by reading what you've said that when I search for something I need to search in terms of tags instead of the question that I am looking for. This is going to make things a lot easier for me because of the fact that I've looked for discussions that I know exist before and I've not been able to find them. I started searching the internet as a teenager using Ask and I always asked it questions so that is how I am accustomed to searching.
5 Feb 10
dorannmwin, you've touched on another important point, and that's the importance of proper tagging.
4 Feb 10
You're exactly right, The_Lamb_Lies_Down. However, a discussion about cars in the fried chicken interest obviously won't be as successful as a discussion about cars in the cars interest, but I won't delete it for that reason. Hopefully members will continue to help guide other members in this respect, too.

I don't know either. I just went to answer your discussion as it is importantto our health and I couldnot understand why it had disappeared. Just what did it violate Mylot?

You've asked the exact question here that I would love for someone to be able to answer. I just want to know what I've violated.

I have had discussions deleted. Some were because I violated Mylot rules. No big deal. Other were deleted because other people, who loved to critize me and don't like me, have had some of my discussions deleted. Some of those discuuions were good ones, too! Some people are so rude here and think they are so perfect they can do anything they want! This is why I have had discussions deleted and I don't like it!

I know now that the discussion that I was referring to was a repeat topic. I've heard before that there will be discussions that are reported abusively, but through this I've learned that it doesn't really happen that way.
8 Feb 10
Hi blue65packer! I'm sorry you feel that way. However, I'd like to clarify that discussions aren't deleted simply because they were reported. Discussions are only deleted if they don't comply with our guidelines or terms of use.

Oh! mine too once. the topic was about the runtime problem in mylot. Maybe because they solvedt the problem already so no need to discuss about it or something.

It seems that the biggest culprit for disappearing discussions is repeat topics, but yours could have disappeared because the problem had already been solved.
5 Feb 10
Actually, the biggest culprits are plagiarism and spam. Your speculation is correct though. It was both a repeat topic and the problem had been solved. Leaving all of the discussions up tends to cause unnecessary panic for those who didn't experience the outage.

It's a real mystery when discussions mysteriously disappear for no apparent reason Although I suppose the admins have their reasons, such as to reduce spam topics or to get rid of discussions that do nothing but waste space.

Like I've said before, I just would like to no the reason that things get deleted. We are all only human and we do make mistakes, I just want to know what mistake that I've made so that I won't make the same mistake again.

Although I suppose that this could be the case, I would think that there would be a review of the topic to determine if there were guidelines that were in fact broken.

I know that I certainly would not want the job of having to look through everything that was reported.

alilin28, everything that is reported gets reviewed before any action is taken. We don't just delete everything that gets reported. In fact, I think you'd be surprised by how much we don't delete!

Meaningless discussions or discussions created to attract response are deleted. Many of my such discussions were deleted. Many of them responded that discussions. While starting a discussion we need to be very careful. We need to read the guide lines carefully. Many times even the discussion is not violating the guidelines can be deleted. This happens when the discussion started is meaningless. Mylot keeps a keen watch on its users. If you still think that your discussion deleted was due to an error, then you can contact to Mylot.

hi why on earth was that discussion deleted as I thought it was a great discussion and I added my response. this is so silly, and I wish that they would implement the idea of telling each of us just what the heck rule we broke that made them delete it. I cannot see where that broke any rules that I remember. I don't think it duplicated someone elses and well I just do not see the reason for it either dorannmwin.

You and I both agree that we should be informed of what kind of violation we had made. We are human and apt to make mistakes but we aren't able to fix those mistakes if we aren't told what our mistake was.

Oh, I completely understand that a discussion will disapper if there are guidelines that are broken. I guess what I am really asking for is that we be given a message that tells us what guideline we've broken.
