"I love you" in a romantic way? I'll probably just smile and say nothing. That's really awkward. I can't say "i love you" back!

Based on your description (which is a friend), I would be surprised, and since he's (okay, I am assuming that this friend is a guy ) my friend I wouldn't know how to react. If I love him the way he loves me, honestly, I'd still just smile. I'm not the type of person to vocally express my love for someone, like saying "I love you", but I will let him know that I love him back through letters and actions.

If i only consider him as a friend, i will tell him that "I love you too but only as a friend, no more than that". If your friend say that to you, you should ask to yourself, "do you love him as a friend or you have a feeling for him and want him to be more than a friend?" I think if you respond by saying that back but when u say that not from your heart, that's not good. That's a lie.

If the feeling is mutual, then "I LOVE YOU TOO". If not, just say "THANK YOU"

I'll say I love you too as a friend. But if I love her more than friends then why not move into the higher level of relationship. right?

It will depend on the person that will tell me. For one I will tell them thank you if it is someone i really like I will smile and be happy about it.

Depends what that type of love they mean, if it's simply platonic love between two friends, I wouldn't really be bothered. I'm not particuarly uncomfortable with that kind of stuff. However I think you mean romantic love, which is a whole lot more complicated. In that case, it would depend on the friend I guess. If I had the same type of feelings toward said friend, then I guess the relationship takes on new level. But then again, that kind of stuff is dangerous, you have to consider how it impacts the friendship if there's a breakup.
