I have just switched to linux from windows XP.
While I liked XP, I find Linux has far more support.
I can do most of the same things in linux that I could do in XP and the only things that I cant do seem to be game related.
Not being a great game player, I don't worry about it.
Linux is free, you can download a disc image, burn it to a disc and have it up and running very quickly.
My linux version is puppy 4.3.1 because it can run entirely from CD if I want it to, has lots of applications and can run from the usb flash drive without me needing to have a hard-drive at all.
If you wish to use an old laptop or desktop computer but find it is too slow ,try puppy linux, you will find there are lots of versions and they can rejuvenate a slow machine to run speedily.
You can use wine(it runs some windows software) if you are pining for some of your old applications and you can try puppy using qemu puppy which runs on windows without needing to log out .
