What Are Your Tipping Habits?

You can afford to go out to the local restaurant or bar. What do you tip the waitress or waiter? Some people think a waiter or waitress makes in a ton of money. Did you know they don't get a paycheck? Most of them are paid $3. an hour. When you go in to eat in whatever place and a waiter or waitress comes to take care of you. They depend on the cash you throw on the table. Their paycheck is eaten up by taxes. So are you mean and run them around? Do you think it is funny to not tip because you can't scrape up enough money? Did you know that the appropriate tip is now up to 20-25% of whatever the bill comes too? Did you know that if you don't tip that means the waitress still has to declare the sales total of your bill and it costs them to serve you.

Hello Kat! That was informative. To answer your questions, I don't mean or I don't even had run away from the waiters. I don't think it's funny not to tip them but I guess the tipping thing depends on the country you reside, it doesn't apply to our country, tipping is voluntary. I don't know about the appropriate tip, glad you mentioned about it, it made me think if we have such the same thing. Generally, I don't have any ideas about this tipping stuffs. But I think, like in our country, waiters/waitresses services are already covered in their income and here in our country it is unusual to have an hourly payout, usually they get paid monthly.

It is interesting to see differnt views on tipping and the fact that in some countries they don't tip. I generally agree with the majority. If my service is great meaning, I don't have to look for them whenever my drink is empty or they are in a bad mood and don't really feel like being at work, I don't tip as much...But if I was giving great service I would tip alot more. Thank you for the response.

My tip depends on the service. I usually tip between 15 and 20 percent. The conditions you describe above do not affect all wait staff but do affect a lot. Iactually only learned about the income tax on sales last year.

As a hairstylist I work off of tips as well so when I go to a restaurant I am usually pretty generous. They have to be a terrible waiter for me to not tip them well

It really depends where we dine. In places where they charge 10-20% service charge, we don't tip anymore because that's what the charge goes for. In places where they don't charge you, we give about 20pesos for the waiter/waitress, sometimes just 10pesos. it really depends... I don't think the taxing isn't the same for waiters/waitresses here as it is for you...

Waiters and waitresses don't even make minimum wage in some places that they work, which is not fair to them and is illegal in California. My husband and I always tip at least 20% and sometimes more, for really good service. We know that they need that money to survive on in these times and some people leave such low tips, we feel bad for them. Those of you who aren't leaving at least 15% are off the mark, it has been the general rule to tip at least 15% for many years now. To make it easy for you, you simply look at the sales tax on your check - and double that amount. that will give you the correct amount that you should tip - at the very least. I taught that to my kids so that they do not undertip a server. Even if the person hasn't had the best day in the world, that's no reason to be mean to them - in fact, maybe they need that little extra cash for some very important situation or emergency. You don't know what their lives are like.

We tip to a maximum of 25% of the bill but this also depends on the service. I we get crappy service then their tip could be 10%. We have had some waitresses who bring the bad bay to work with them and they could care less about the service they provide so I believe they do not deserve the same tip as someone who cares about their customers

I overtip. But then again, I've cocktailed and been a bartender. Some servers don't even make $3/hr. Oh yes, I remember the paychecks of $0.00. But one thing, when you tip, you are paying for service. Excellent service and I'll tip you 50% or more. Horrible service and I won't stiff you, but 10% in my book is like leaving 2ยข. And I always take into account how slammed the server is which might affect service, because I know what it's like to be in the weeds.

The tip I leave depends on the service I've recieved. It also depends on the place Im eating/drinking at.If its an expensive restaurant I leave more because the bill is higher. My friend was a very good waitress and she came home many nights and we counted her money from an eight hour shift and she had well over $100 almost every night. So the $3 hr paycheck didnt really matter that much to her just for tax purposes.

If there is service charge, then I don't leave tips. If none, then I give a minimum of 1% up to 10%
