What is "guest blogging"?

I've heard people talk about "guest blogging" before, and how they use it to make money or get more readers for their blog, but what is it really?
Is it where you let someone make a post on your blog, and they add a link to their blog?
I recently started my own blog with Blogspot. So far I have one "follower," and I would like for more people to read my blog. If guest blogging isn't a great way to get traffic, can anyone suggest something else? :o

Guest blogging is when you write a blog post/article and get it published on another more established blog.
The purpose of guest blogging can vary, some people do this for fun or b/c they like to see their name in print, but most do this to promote themselves/their cause/site. A big benefit of guest blogging is that it allows you to get your link up on very popular blogs that otherwise may not have linked tro you , since most blog owners allow the inclusion of at least 1 link in each guest post.
