Some chinese seem to feel that it is impolite to ask question when they don't quite understand. But in my opinion, it's much better to say that you don't understand than to pretend you understand and answer very vagely. When i don't quite understand, i will say "i am sorry ,i don't follow you, would you mind saying again?" or "pardon, i am not clear on what you said". What about you ?

yes,i agree with you.It is very good to ask the question very politely if we dont understand what is being told.the sentences you wrote are quite very often used by many.We are living with in globally so we should understand each others sense of thinking .sometimes we dont catch what is told so if we want it repeated then better ask in a proper way.

If I do not understand the question I ask them to repeat it or be more clear with the question. And if you still do not know the answer to the question then politly tell them that you do not know the answer to their question.

But first we need to listen fully. Then watch look with a smile then politely make apologies that you could not follow. It all depends upon your motivation to listen to. If you have a task after what is said then you should politely insist. If you are not interested then ignore it rather than cut a bad figure.
