I posted a discussion on Sunday morning my time as I was cleaning up my office after water rushed through it overnight. I have later learned that I came through the rain with minimal damage compared to most and this is due to the fact that I am on a hill. A friend of mine had dams burst and fences washed away and through his blog I discovered that it was the heaviest rainfall in possibly 25 years. Rainfall topped 200mm (8 inches) in many parts of the city and hit an incredible 400mm (16 inches) in part of the Hinterland -- all in about six hours. Check out this link for a news report on the flooding and then the others for visuals. http://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2010/02/08/186221_gold-coast-news.html Video footage of big boats floating downstream causing chaos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmD--tVeEGg Photo gallery of local flooding, pictures taken by local residents. http://tools.goldcoast.com.au/photo-gallery/photo-gallery-view.php?category_id=13055 All of these images were taken within a 20 minute drive of my home. Take a look and let me know what you think.

It is dry in Queensland when you go west of the Great Dividing Range but the coastal areas to the East of that are always pretty lush and wet. We do have dry periods, but they are always followed by heavy downpours. There is no in between unfortunately. If the rain was more gentle and consistent then these events would not happen. Melbourne (and the whole southern part of Australia) is always dry these days. It is no where near as green as I remember it being down there when I lived there. I grew up on the Mornington Peninsula, what part of Melbourne are you from?

I am in the Coburg area, it is getting very scary, I always try cutting back on water usage but I know some just don't care...its frightening...Guess you don't have to worry these days...

Deary me, you were lucky weren't you my friend? What with your strange weather and the dumps of snow in the US, cattle dying through cold in Mongolia, it's all happening isn't it? It makes me feel a bit uneasy, if I'm being honest as though it's leading up to something of epic proportions...but I try not to think about that! I only hope we get a decent summer for once!

This is not strange weather for this region in summer. It is our wet season, but it has been fairly dry so far. It seems to do that here, no rain for a whole month at all and then you get the whole months worth in a few days or even overnight. I knew that it had been heavy rain, but not as bad as it was. My garage might have flooded without my basketball ring being over the drain, but I just helped it to be worse than it ever would have been! The ones that are affected the worst by these floods here are the ones that build there multi million dollar mansions with their huge boats alongside the rivers and canals. Much of the Gold Coast city is a maze of these made made canals that they have built on.

Wow. There is so much damage! I can’t get over those roaming boats! It is scary stuff and by the looks of it you were lucky that you just had to deal with one room and a garage being flooded! It’s strange to us here in W.A. because we’ve had so little rain lately, I guess it is your hot, humid, rainy season over there. I pray for an end ton the flooding...Keep safe won’t you?

Here it rains mainly in the winter and it is never enough it seems because there are often water restrictions. It has not been as dry here as in the North Eastern States, they've had bad droughts there. I'm glad everything is drying out for you, hope it stays that way!

Well my office is dry now but this region is not. You may have seen footage of the flooding in Brisbane yesterday. It has been raining really heavily again. Cars were floating down the street in my town as well! It is good to get rain, but it is either drought or flood here in this part of the world, nothing much in between!

Hi Paula, thanks for your comments and well wishes. Not much rain today, so the carpets are drying well now as we were able to open up the garage fully for the whole day today. The musty damp smell has nearly gone. Do you get much rain at all in WA? Everything I see about it is dry looking. I guess that it has its green lush areas just like everywhere else though. When I visited Adelaide over Xmas, I was amazed at how dry and barren the surrounds are. It is like a little green patch in the middle of a desert!

Wow..here I thought it was just a misplaced basketball goal causing your office to get flooded. Better be careful..those floods are nasty business.

I knew that the rain had been heavy overnight, but not as bad as it was. I had no idea that these areas so close to me were flooded so bad as I do not watch TV news or read newspapers and had not had the radio on much. My garage might have suffered some minor flooding without my basketball ring being over the drain, but I just helped it to be worse than it ever would have been! It would not have gotten into my office and wet the carpet if the ring was not blocking the drain! Did you see the boats and their moorings floating down the river, scary stuff!
