Children and TV

The other day I was watching television and this commercial for a new movie came on. In one part of the commercial you see a sweet little old lady but then her face morphs into a demonic looking face and she starts climbing up the wall and ceiling. I thought to myself, if I were bringing up my kids now I would'nt have the TV on at all until they were in bed, unless it was specifically childrens programming. I think too many of the images that are displayed on TV are too intense, bizarre, scary or innapropriate for little children to be exposed to. My children are grown now and I must admit that when they were little the TV was on alot. I admit I was not as aware and concious as I am now but I also think TV was not as bad as it can be now. And relatively speaking it was'nt all that long ago. But I think they are constantly pushing the envelope on what is shown on TV. Even things that might seem innocuous can be scary to little children. My daughter was telling me that a family friend's daughter who is 1 1/2 freaked out recently and was upset for close to an hour when she saw a commercial for dog treats where they have a dog smile real big and he had human teeth. Totally freaked her out. What do you think? Do you agree or do you think this is being too overprotective?
