How would you know if it is your fate or destiny? Which do you prefer?

Its a little bit confusing between fate and destiny. Well, let me define it in a way, as my own understanding to this. Well, for me I could say that fate is something happens for a reason. It's our fate if something that we never expect to happen and it just happens and we never had a choice. But when we say destiny, it would be something that we need actions to determined a drastic effect on us.
