Does Your Dog Sleep In On Rainy Days

It was 11:30 a.m. today before my pup got out of bed and only because it was the fourth time I told her lets go. See when it is raining it is like pulling teeth to get her up and out. Meanwhile I was up at five. I figured by 7:30 she'd come wandering out of the bedroom but no.. Quiet as a mouse. I go to see her and she simply rolls over and turns her head to give me those sweet puppy eyes saying she would really like a belly rub now. Next time I go into see her, she is still on her back with her head turned the other way, looking out the window, watching the birds in the trees or was she watching the rain drops come down, thinking how much she really doesn't have to go potty? She has a awesome view out the window from the bed. She loves to watch the birds and the squirrels playing in the trees. Well she finally gets up at 11:30 whereas we are usually out for our first walk by 7:30, at the latest. We went outside alright and she went as far as she needed to to go number one and then turn around, heading back for the door. She doesn't like the rain much. Even though she has a deluxe raincoat that fits her well. Some days she is all for going for a walk in the rain. Not today, she just wanted to stay in bed and roll around some more. Does your dog ever sleep in rather late? Later than normal? What do you do? Do you get them out of bed or do you let them get up on their own, on their own time? Since I was home today, it didn't really matter. Otherwise I would of had to of forced her up and out but I really don't like to bother her or interrupt her nap time. I'm pretty sure it is the weather because if it is sunny out all I hear in the morning is 'plunk'. That's my pup jumping out of bed and heading for a sun spot in the living room. How does your dog act on rainy days?

my puppy sleeps as long as I do, and during rainy days i can still find him playing outside, I guess its because he's still a puppy. And he follows me around all the time, if i am on the computer, he stays and sleeps on my lap and when its already late at night try to move him to my bed (we sleep together) but when he noticed me going back on the computer, he wakes up again and just stays under my computer chair, waiting for me to pick him up and let him sleep on my lap. If i go to bed, he goes to bed with me as well and sleeps under my armpit, lol. He also love sleeping on the lap of my huge teddy bear my fiance gave me. He's a mini pinscher puppy, so tiny and naughty.

Cute. Thank you for your response. My pup soes the same thing, or at least did. I would put her to bed but she would get up and lay near, waiting for me. Often times I would just let her fall asleep near me and then when it was time for me to go to bed, just pick her up and take her to bed too but she'd wake up. I tried taking her before bed, as her bedtime is 8:30 p.m. whereas sometimes mine is later but like I said, if I take her to the bedroom and then leave back on computer or whatever, she gets up anyway. We are still working on happy medium. I find it amazing that your little dog will play out side, in the rain. Through this discussion, I was almost ready to conclude that dogs don't like rain but not now.

my baby dog does the same. she hates getting out in the rain, even though sometimes i hold the umbrella over her and let myself get wet, because she dont have a raincoat. just the same she would do as yours i bet and still not go out to the last minute. it amazes me how long she can hold it and i really dont like her to because i worry it will cause her problems down the line. its so funny how people-like they are, isnt it?

It is funny how some people are, for sure but I agree with you in that I do not like to leave my dog waiting to go potty either because I don't think it is good for her. As our pups get older, the control of their bladder gets much stronger, as the bladder gets larger as well so is how they can seem to hold themselves for sometime once they get a little older. How good of you to hold your umbrella for your little dog. That is sweet. Thank you for your response bunnybon.

Heh- I don't have a dog, but I know I would rather stay underneath the covers if I hear it pouring outside. I've stayed in bed as late until the afternoon because of the rain! Being outside at the time is just so unnatural - and your puppy proved it!

Lol, I suppose Qaeyious but my pup having to potty is very natural and she is house trained. It is for her best interest, health wise that she is taken outside, at least three times a day in all weather conditions. I know what you are saying though and lucky you! I don't mind being in the rain. I have hats, a raincoat and an umbrella so I'm good. can always take a nice warm bath or shower when I get home. Sometimes, when I wake in the morning, still dark out and I hear it pouring, I kinds wish I could stay in bed also. I love to be in bed, under the warmth of the covers listening to it pour and howl outside. Makes for a cozy sleep in but unfortunately haven't been able to do that for sometime now. Pleasant dreams and thank you for your response.

Our Dog is a hound, they sleep as long as they can but when they are up they are hunting, if not something outside, it's the critters that live under the house, she goes from room to room checking to see if they got in the house. But she does hate the rain and goes out only long enough to do her thing and come right back in.

Likewise, as I have mentioned. Sometimes she will surprise me, curl her tail up, puff her chest out with her head held high and off she goes, in the rain. Not very often though. Usually it is a quick out and then right back in again. My neighbor has a basset hound X lab and well, he sniffs everything and howls. Do your dog howl also?

I bet. I found it quite amazing when I heard him for the first time. Apparently he is quite vocal.

Not only rainy days, if someday I decide to sleep till late, even my dog will not get up as he sleeps in my bed only. Usually my husband who gets up very early takes the dog for a walk around 5 AM, but when he is not around, it is my duty. So last sunday, I did not get up till 7.30AM and the dog was also sound asleep in my bed and when it is raining, he prefers not to go out. If pressed hard, then he goes down and urinates in our lawn and rushes back upstairs. If it continues raining till evening, he will not go out at all and I feel surprised that a dog who is so particular about the timings of his potty and urine, remains active through out the day without doing both.

Hm, I find that surprising also. I got to know my dogs timings and make sure she gets out rain or shine. Right now we are not at our house so I have to take her down the hall, into an elevator and out the front doors to a lawn, so it isn't like she can just go to the door and go out in the yard. I have to physically put our coats on and take her outside since it is a public area, driveway and cars. On those days, like today when it is raining pretty good all day, my dog doesn't want to go outside at all. Definitely not for a walk. Whereas she loves to go for her walks and so do I. It is good to know that your dog will sleep in too and that he is not into the rain either. My brothers dog, who resides in a house, will actually tip toe onto the lawn when it is wet, go potty and tip toe back to the patio before heading up the stairs and back into the house. The dog actually tip toes. He doesn't like getting his feet wet first ting in the morning and I can't blame him. Short haired jack russel. Anyway, thank you for your response!

Wow. Smart. he understands where the potty is. How sweet is that? Now, if you could just get him to actually urinate in the toilet! Amazing. What a good dog! Thanks for sharing.

I wil share another thing about my dog. Though he likes to sleep through out the morning as there is nobody in the house to disturb him, In rare circumstances, when he feels like urinating, he simply goes to our toilet and in a corner, he urinates and comes back and goes to sleep again. Sometimes even in the night, when I feel he has not even woken up, he simply tiptoes to the toilet, and it is only when I go the toilet,I find that he has been there before me.

Hello EvrWonder, My dog doesnt mind going out in the rain. He minds when I put the raincoat on though. He loves the snow and he could stay out there all the time, but I dont leave him outdoors. He loves sleeping....dont they all? I let him sleep as I work from home so I can take him out whenever he asks for it. He will also roll on his back to have his tummy rubbed. Thats so cute!! Im typing here now and he's on his couch, sleeping soundly and snoring!!

You are welcome and thank you for your comment. As for booties, my dog wouldn't walk in the ones from the store at all. Way too rigid. I made her some that are custom fit and now she runs like crazy in them, jumps, plays and seems to really like them. When you do put a rain coat on your dog, don't make a big deal about it and nor will he. Be sure never to laugh at him because dogs can get embarrassed easily. I know for my dog she really doesn't like velcro. It is the tearing sound when undoing it. I tend to use snaps. I use big ones so that even her measly 6 pounds can not pop them and out of her closes she comes. I tend to build the D ring for her leash right into her coats. Another thing I have found with my dog is that if the arms are not comfortable she wont walk and if the arms in anything she wears goes down past her knees she wont walk in it either. It inhibits her ability to bend her legs and move freely. makes sense to me. I get my pup involved right from pulling out the paper, pencil, tape and scissors when designing her outfits. She loves to fit patterns now. Never hesitates and has her nose right into the mix of the goings ons. Funny actually but she likes to be warm and dry and seems to understand the process. Good for you for making your dog a raincoast. You can make a really simple one to a very detailed one. It is fun and rewarding when you are done, your dog approves and you can walk in the rain knowing your pooch is keeping (mostly) dry. have fun and Good Luck persuading Fido.

Happy Days in The Sunshine - Prefers Sunny Days
Lo. Hi Magic, what breed of dog is yours? I so know the belly rubs too. My girl loves the snow. It's fun, watching her chase snow balls. She goes crazy over them. Although her toes can get frost bite super easily, i do not let her stay in the snow for very long, at all. Last year I made her some booties, which she loves, so she can be out in the snow for longer periods which she is totally up for. It's a blast. Lol, my pup snores also. Only when she falls asleep on her back, while giving her belly rubs. I think that dogs do enjoy sleeping. I prefer my dog to be active during waking hours though. Then she gets a really good nights sleep and I like that because then she is ready to go fresh the next day and we are usually quite active. Your dog doesn't like rain coats hey? My dog dislike cloths too when I first started putting them on her. Her snow suit especially. She would just stand there but then I waited until she was hungry one day, put the cloths on, had her out in the hall and got her to come for a cookie. Since they she will walk, run and play in her cloths. Most are practical however. She doesn't usually wear cloths just for the sake of it or to look cute or anything Her cloths have purpose, to keep her dry and warm. Thank you for your response.

Ahhh, she's so cute. Thanks for sharing a picture of her. Oh I wouldnt dress up my dog just for the fun of it..he's really not into getting dressed at all. I have a 6you black Labrador. I keep trying to put booties on him but he doesnt like it at all. So we dont stay out for too long in the snow. I wont go into the streets either. As for rain coat, I keep trying to give him treats or tell him he's so cute, such a good dog, but he doesnt like it and I think its because of the squishing sounds it makes. So I found another fabric that is waterproof and isnt that stiff. Im going to make him one instead. Lets hope he'll let me put it on him and enjoy being outside when he's wearing it. Thanks for sharing EvrWonder!!

Roxy is such a clever pup. Usually the goats waken me when Pickles head butts the back porch. Roxy knows this is the time for me to get up and feed everyone...however lately, she is pre-empting Pickles' strike by running into "our" room and running up my side *(she's only little and I'm tall) and then looking fixedly at me when she hears the rooster next doors first crow. She's not fussed on breakfast and eats her kibble a few pieces at a time throughout the morning then she is out investigating the new day or playing with her toys. We don't go for walks yet because I've not been able to train her on a lead yet...she hates it. When I found her she was roaming the streets. At first after moving in with me she would follow me whenever I went somewhere but now she takes off to go visit old friends, no longer the scared, dirty little dog she was but a jaunty, sweet smelling little bundle of confidence.

How sweet. You two sound made for each other. I love how she has gained confidence. Same with my Roxy. It took awhile but she is doing quite well now. Very independent. I have no trouble with the rain either. I enjoy it sometimes and summer rain is nice, I agree. If it isn't blowing with wind, I find that sometimes, not often but sometimes Roxy is up for a stroll in the rain and is nice. I love walking with her in most weather unless it is freezing out or too hot. I am concerned more with her than myself however. Good for you for taking little Roxy in. Thank you for your response.

Silly me...rain: it rarely rains here and it was raining when I first spotted Roxy. She doesn't seem to mind it and if I go out, she comes to. I love the rain and have no problem going out in it myself...particularly summer rain.

My pup has been an earlier riser since I got her last June. She normally has me up by 7 am, every once in a while she'll let me sleep til 8 lol. She doesn't like the rain, but she will go out in it if she really has too. She's really good about letting me know she needs out, even if it's raining and cold out. I don't particularly like it since we don't have a fenced in yard and I must take her out on her leash lol

Hi palo, I must take my girl on a leash often as well. Especially since she is quite small and the Eagles are nesting. Like your pup, mine will let me know when she needs to go outside. If it is really pouring, she will go and will go potty or 'tinkles' when I tell her and then bolt for the door to get back inside. Other times, she is totally up for a walk. The cold hasn't been too much of an issue yet, not like the rain. She has a great wardrobe so is always dressed according to the weather. Since she is a Yorkie, no undercoat, just hair like us, she can get cold very easily but also too hot in the heat of the summer also. If your yard is unfenced and there is traffic near, it is a good idea to use a leash for sure. Happy tails and thanks for your response.

My dog has started sleeping late, just like me! He used to wake up at 5:30 and be ready to play. Now, I think since I keep him up all night because I have insomnia, he sleeps all morning long. He really hate the rain. He is pretty small and he gets cold really quickly. He doesn't want to go outside if the temperature goes lower than 50. When it is in the 70's, he wants to stay out all day. He was born and raised in San Antonio, so he is a warm weather dog.

Cute, thanks for your response. Well it is true that around normal bed time, she wakes up and is super playful. This is new with her too. She is two going on three in may. I am seeing a lot of definitive changes in her recently. In any case she is small also. She gets cold easily. No undercoat, hair like us humans. What breed of dog is yours? Mine is a Yorkie, Shitz Tzu and Maltese, she is 6.5 pounds. I can understand why your dog sleeps in but my pup doesn't have an excuse as we were in bed early enough for her to be up by 7 a.m. but 11:30a.m.? Hm. My dog was born on the west coast of British Columbia so she is used of the rain, one would think but like your dog, especially after the winter time, when there is sunshine she wants to stay outside forever more. Did you dog used to get up at 5:30a.m. even when you were still sleeping?

Hi Jen, I think my dog would likely stay in bed as long as I did too but I can't stay there as long as she can so i am up before her, on those rainy days. I wouldn't say she is lazy but I think more lethargic when it is raining. She is always up for playtime. She will walk too, just not so much in the rain, if at all on a good day but like I have commented previous, she will sometimes surprise me and go for a stroll in the rain, even if she doesn't have to go potty. Just because. I guess she like to check out all the scents along her stroll. Thank you for your response.

As far as I am concerned, my dog usually just stay in his bed for the day long when it is rainy so hard. But when the sun is coming out,he will usuallu come as soon as possible and enjoy the so nice sun. I think he may know that the sun can give him warm and light. He is so clever a dog.I love my pretty dog so much.have a nice day.

Hi monkey, thanks for stopping by! Dogs do understand that the sun gives them warmth. I know that my dog loves the sunshine also. In fact, I have recently put up some grow lights as I am starting seeds for the vegetable garden. I have found my dog laying right near the lights on a couple of occasions now. I think she gets it and enjoys the rays even though they are artificial. I am glad to read more about other dogs who prefer to just stay in bed on rainy days. The more I share with MyLot friends, the more I learn each time and is one of the main reasons I love this website so much. Thank you for your response.

Yes, I have a Feist and he seems to get a little depressed when it rains. I'll take him to the door, and he's all excited; then, when I open it and he sees it is raining, he drops his head as if heart broken. It would be sad to me if weren't so darn funny! He sleeps afterward. Sometimes I wonder if he has a little bit of cat in him due to his fear of water.

Hi Rallon, great to hear from you! I so know what you mean. Sometimes my girl is so wound up to go for what she thinks is going to be a fantastic walk. She is hyper all the way to the door, then I open the door and within her first toe hitting the pavement she does the same. her head goes down, as does her tail and she is ready to do a 360 and head back in. Sometimes I pick her up and take her out further and she will either be good with it and start walking or she will turn back in again. The poor thing, she is short so the water hits her not only from the top but splashed up from the bottom as well. She gets a major towel off when she gets back inside and thinks it is a big play session. She appears to like being toweled off. Perhaps for each time I do this and make it fun, she will be less inclined to head back inside when it is raining. After all she has a couple awesome raincoats so it isn't like she is getting totally soaked either but yeah, she is like your Feist, she doesn't really care too much for the rainy days. I'm sorry, what was the breed of your dog again? I am trying to pick up the humorous look of your pup when his head goes down cos he just discovered it is pouring out. PS: My brothers dog will tip toe onto the lawn in the morning to go potty and tip toe back, right into the house again. That is hilarious to see.

I guess that maybe it is. When she hears the rain coming down when she wakes in the morning, she will just lay there with no intentions of getting out of bed for potty, breakfast, toys or anything. I try hard to understand my dog. Sometimes I wish I knew what she was thinking. After reading responses, I am understanding that it is okay for her to want to just stay in bed on a rainy morning. I understand that most dogs do. Thank you for your response.

Lol, yep my pup too. She is far more demanding of belly rubs on the rainy days. I make a point to double up on the indoor play sessions and also do more shopping, as she comes with me and visiting so that she at least is still getting out. Exercise is the big one in our house though. She still needs her exercise and when she isn't going outside, due to the foul weather, we must make play time very active, stimulating and meaningful.
