How do we really know about other countries if we have not been there ourselves?

Hello Mylot friends, It's been awhile since I have been on. I was just talking to someone on another social network, that has an opportunity to go to the Middle East and see the newest of the worlds tallest skyscrapers in Dubai. I made a some what ignorant and presumptuous comment about the middle east not being the safest of places in the world, and offended a friend of her's who is in Saudi Arabia. So since this is also an international community I thought I would pose the question "What do you think the rest of the world is the most ignorant about in their assumptions of the place you call home?

Hello, I'd like to say that we can't explore the whole world by ourselves so it's normal that we accept someone else's opinion, although it may be wrong and it may offend someone.

This is a good question. I think we only know a country if we've been there. However, it's possible to visit a country as a tourist and have only a superficial look, and come back home no wiser about it. I think to really know a country, you have to stay there for a long time and interact with the residents.

i think the best thing to do to learn about other countries even without visiting that place personally is to read about it. There are many books telling about a certain country. Geographical areas, the customs and traditions of such places, the food, the people and the community itself. The safety of the environment specially when foreigners visit to that area. To me, this is the best thing to know about a country not just depending upon what we hear from the media or from other people who have negative impressions of the place and they even not been there.

That's the common mistake committed by people in some parts of the world: judging another country based on what they heard. I lived in the Philippines and I know that our country has a bad reputation about terrorism and peace and order because of some bans going anywhere in the country especially for tourists, but I will let you know that our country is one of the safest in the world. In the place I lived right now, I can still feel fresh air and no incident of terrorism. In fact we can still roam around the street at night very safe. I haven't to Dubai yet, but I have many friends working there and they said, it's such a lovely place. They never experienced any trouble or bully employers, they find happiness and contentment there. But of course you have to respect their culture and tradition and Dubai is very strict when it comes to rules.

When even one's spouse sometimes is a mystery how much can one know of another country even if one were to visit it and stay there. I would say it is the individual's experience and exposure to any situation that can help in judging it but not fully. Some are lucky to get the best deal and therefore praise that country to the skies and vice versa.
