in our research studies, we are not allowed to use wikipedia as reference for a bit of information... they say that this site is not stable for anyone could change the info that was published... what can you say about this?

Sure, wikipedia is an excellent source of information. it is very convenient to use it to search for the concepts which i don't know or i am not familiar with. i can find almost the information in my research direction, bioinformatics. i have no idea about why we are not allowed to use wikipedia as a reference in the writings. usually, almost each wikipedia page presents a number of references on the bottom part of the page. you can use those references.

It's true that wikipedia can have some kind of lack of trust somtimes but here is what I think about it for doing school work: -if you use it as you first source of information it's prety helpful to guide your research!! -if you use only this website, it's pretty much says to people that you are lazy, because wikipedia is not the most valuable source of information so yeah, use it to help yourself, but don't say you used it because it's one of the most hated website by teachers!:P

Wikipedia is, perhaps, 80% reliable these days but that is probably not good enough for many assignments. It is worthwhile regarding Wikipedia as a starting point. An article may, for example, give you a better understanding of the subject and give you better keywords to use for more searches. Most articles quote references for their sources. Use these references but always double-check the information.

I think so.I used to refer wikipedia when I was in my college to refer some topics as we couldn't find any other information from any of the books. The first place I used to look was wikipedia and I have never had a butter experience regarding wrong information in wikipedia. But I guess as anyone can edit the content it won't be 100% reliable.Anyone could tamper with the original data and add wrong data.A friend of mine that once wikipedia posted that some celebrity had passed away but in actual he was alive. This was added by some mischievous person. This was removed quickly though.I am not sure about this news as he said that he heard it from a friend of his.

that's my concern.. the website is open for revisions in the information published... in that case it would not be reliable.. in addition that the author is not acknowledge, so we can't have proper citation for a bit of information that we used..

Well wikipedia should be best taken with a grain of salt. There is a lot of good information on there granted. Then again, there is a lot of it that has been proven false. I use it mostly for entertainment purposes. There is some accuracy on it, but much like everything else on the Internet, you never know what is true and what is false. Many schools do not accept it as a valid source for assignments. Including the university that I am currently attending. However, there is a lot of cited information on the website that will lead to links that may be reputable. Check those out, as while the actual wikipedia pages might not be credible, the source of information that is cited for specific pages will be. At least that is what happens in my experience.

For me wikipedia is the best site for any type of information you want. I have always used it to do my projects and assignments and this site has been of great help to me. Also this is one of the most popular sites on the site right now so in no way it is unstable. As for being the able to change the information thing that is one of the features which has allowed this site to develop and become such a huge source of knowledge. This is the feature which has allowed this site to expand its database rapidly. In my opinion wikipedia is a great site which helps many people everyday to finish their assignments.

surely, wiki is good site and has plenty of resources. As far as you are concerned I can assure you that even if someone changes the information, and if the information is incorrect or is not up to the mark than it is changed by the administrator..
