Would you join a commune/intentional community?

In May I plan to visit a guy who is attempting to build a small commune where people will live together, work together, grow their own food, be their own community. Each time I tell my friends, and family they are very shocked, and try to talk me out of it. It made me wonder if my decision is really that crazy. Would you join a commune/intentional community? Why or why not?

I probably would not join them...that is how most cults get started LOL

It's also how nations start, and recall that although we think of cults as those who drink poisonous Kool aid, the major religions all began as cults.

Hey there Goldeneagle, The groups you mentioned fell under what I meant when I wrote poisonous Kool Aid. Unfortunately, like anything else, the groups that are remembered are those few who cause violence and pain, no one knows about the I.C. in Virginia with over one hundred members that makes its living making tofu, and hammocks, covers all of its members on health insurance, and grows its own food. They don't know about the one in California, that while disbanded, had actor Peter Coyote as a member, and lasted for twenty years. I find that the world outside a lot of these communities have their fair share of power hungry abusive crazies, that risk is everywhere.

they probably, as the responder above says, are thinking of cults. a commune like you are describing could work but they often don't, it depends very much on the people. in a close environment like that it often becomes like a set of siblings or an office - lots of rivalries and silly pettiness. i think if those involved are laid back and goodnatured it stands a chance, good idea for all involved to take plenty of breaks from each other though.

Hey Jb, That last statement is probably good advice. There are definitely times when I need to be away from all people, so breaks would be beneficial.
