Who would you rather live with?

Would you rather live with someone who is frequently cynical about life, or someone who is optimistic to the point that they often can't see the reality of a situation? Why would you prefer the one you chose? Does either of these personality types describe you well?

I'll take the cynic any day. At least this person isn't going through life with blinders on. This person may even make you aware of some things that if not pointed out in a cynical manner, may cause you harm in some way. Neither truly represents my personality. I keep my eyes open always and my mind aware to both the good and bad in life. Therefore forming a more balanced opinion about the world as a whole. ‹(°¿°)›

I also try to look at life and see both the good and bad, although seeing the good is a challenge that I have to work hard at. I think to me, it's important to "call it like it is." If a situation is good, it's useless to try to find something to complain about in it. But if a situation is bad, it can be harmful to try to lie to yourself that it's ok. I suppose perfect objectivity would be the ideal way to go, but what human being was ever perfectly objective?

I think it would be nice to have it all. Someone balanced so well that they could see reality but wasnt a cynic. But i realize that most people lean one way or the other. I would rather have the one that sees reality, as opposed to one who doesnt know and doesnt care about anything.

I also think that a balance between the two would be ideal. I can't say that I have ever met someone who exhibited that perfect balance, however. I think everyone leans one way or the other to a degree.

I would rather live with someone who is optimistic because the people who are cynical often also can't see reality because of their extreme cynisism. My girlfriend can be that way. Yet, as she says to me, "always the optimist.."

That's a good point. Sometimes those of us who are cynical can fail to see some of the better sides of a situation.

I used to be a very cynical person growing up. I wouldn't want to live with me. I learned that my problems were of my own doing, and the only way to fix my problems was to change my outlook on life. It was the most obvious, yet most important thing I've done in my 26 years of living.

Congrats for being able to change to a more positive outlook. I could probably use a few pointers in that direction.

I could not live with someone who was cynical about life. That would get so boring and ignoring to deal with on an everyday basis. I rather have an optimistic person in my life then someone who sees everything in a bad light. Having a person who is seeing the glass half full is so much better then half empty. Being optimistic to the point of not seeing the reality of a certain situation would still be better then dealing with cynicism.

Yes, I can see how it might be tough to live with a person who is always pessimistic, especially if you are an optimist.

I would rather live with someone happy and optimistic. I'm sure it would get on my nerves at times but I would rather be annoyed by happiness then annoyed by complaining. The complaining would probably just put me in a bad mood where the happiness would cheer me up more so then bring me down.

Hm...I guess if you have to be annoyed, being annoyed by cheerfulness might be a better bet.
