Hacking a baby, doesn't deserve death?

First of all, if you get upset easily, please don't read this. This morning I read about a man who was one of the caregivers to his bedridden physically and mentally disabled sister-in-law. He killed her. Then, he took an axe, went outside, and proceeded to attack a mother and her 4 month old baby with said axe. He hacked the baby to death. As a neighbor called out to him that she was calling the police (the neighbor lady could hardly go out and stop the man herself), she saw the mother's face was missing, but all the mom kept screaming was "My baby, my baby!"
The man was taken into custody where he admitted smoking marijuana, but there are tests to be done to see if he had also combined pot with alcohol. Now I'm not being combative, I truly want to know something. How can people who are against the death penalty, not think this man should be put to death? He hacked up a baby! No prior sign of mental illness, and even though he was on pot, even some mylotters admit to smoking that, and they don't hack up people.
