UK Priests tell Wives Submit to your Husbands and be Silent

Two UK priests are in hot water today...after telling wives that they should submit to their husbands and blaming women for the rise in divorces. They want women to "remain silent" and "do what their husbands want in everything". If you can bear to read more here you go: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1250464/Curate-outrages-congregation-telling-women-silent-submit-husbands.html What in the world were these guys thinking? How bad do you think it is going to get for them? Tell what you think of this whole thing.

OMG, when I first read your post, before I read the article, I was thinking it was lucky for them that they'd never be married. THEN I saw that they both ARE married AND they have kids to ruin! I'm sorry but this is an example of how the bible taken literally doesn't fit today's world. There are some deeply religious people that quote the bible on some subjects yet clearly demonstrate by their words and deeds that they don't believe or follow other "rules" from the book. Anyway, I'm afraid I was almost crossing into the political interest with this...lol...wonder why! Anyway, to stay on-topic, I think these guys are cavemen and if I were a member of that church I'd never attend there again! submit and remain silent my A$$!! Annie

I just couldn't resist! The girls will grow up thinking they're meant to "submit and obey" and the boys will grow up to think women are possessions to be ordered around. GRRRR!! Annie

You are soo right that those children will be ruined by having these men as fathers. If anything...it is men like this that cause divorce.

Not long ago I posted a subject about this very scripture and surprisingly the vast majority agreed and the vast majority were women who responded. No where in the article did I read that they told women to be silent the article implied that some other writings the church put forward said that but they didn't provide any quotes from it so I wonder how literal it was said. The only two quotes from women who disagreed seemed to be anonymous this article seems to be more hype and drama than it is facts, proving its good publicity to bash religion.

I don't know what this churches policies are or their doctrine but from what I read they did quote the bible. Funny I don't remember this verse saying anything about being a stepford wife, or the rest of the chapter for that matter. It seems to me they talked about the whole chapter, further down in the article they said they put heavy importance on what the man is to do also, implying they read the whole chapter. But because the translation they used said "submit" people were offended. So I have to wonder how much of this was quoted per verbatim and how much of it was to grab a headline. Did they say people aren't following what was in the chapter or just that women weren't? The fact that they use single quotation marks seems they are quoting a quote and don't have the actual wording but this could just be the difference between the UK and the US. In the US you use single quotation marks if you are quoting someone who is quoting someone else, which is like hearsay or your opinion not necessarily what was said. Congrats on your marriage.

I would not say it is good publicity to bash religion. But I do think it is shocking for a priest in today's day and age to tell women that they are responsible for the increased divorce rate because they don't "submit" to their hushands. Or because they are not "silent". I know that would definately NOT work in my marriage. We would not have last 15 years (and still going)if I had been expect to remain "silent" and "submit" to everything he thinks, says and wants. But then I have a man who not only respects me but likes the fact that I am opinonated, indepedent and intelligent. He is not intimated by it...infact he is proud of it. I would not be with a man that wanted me to be a "stepford wife".

Religion is the supreme tool of the slave master. Government can only threaten your life, religion can threaten your soul. It would be easy, in my mind to bash these two priest but our they not just applying the Bible in real world applications. The real angry should be directed toward the Bible and other religious text that gives license to one individual to dominate another.

That is a lot of reason why I have problems with orgainzed religion. NO ONE should dominate ANYONE. Everyone should be equal. But try telling the church that.

I'm not surprised in the least! These priests will not get in any trouble over this advise, because its coming indirectly from the Vatican. Roman Catholic Theology has not changed in a thousand years, so don't expect anything dramatic to happen here. Roman Catholic Priests are women haters, because they fear the female gender. The Pope has kept women strictly limited in their roll in the church, and you can depend on it! This is not going to change anytime soon.

These were not Catholic priests. The Catholic priests are not allowed to marry and these priests are both married. I will have to re-read the article to remember what religion they are. But it is still shocking in todays day and age for them to say that. Submit my butt...not going to happen.

Hi lilwonders, I believe that this is still the official position of the Roman Catholic Church. Although it would not have been noticed fifty years ago, most priests tone it down a bit today. They won't get into any trouble with the church, although they may with their parishioners. It is not just the Catholic church however, there are other churches that officially say this. Blessings.

There are a lot of religions that still teach this. But it really does not have a place in the modern world. I think they will rethink this position. Especially sence it is being reported that people are quiting this church because of these comments.

Well the way I see it is if women knew then what we all know now - there wouldn't be a lot of marriage throughout history period! I've seen woman out there that go with every whim of their husbands and frankly I feel sorry for them. WTF?? I'm sorry. I am divorced, but what, I'm the 'cause' of that because he couldn't stay out of the bar and keep his pants on? Is THAT what women 'need' to submit too? PPPPFFFFFFTTTT!! I've got a sign for them - ..!..

According them instead of getting a divorce you should have stood back quietly and let you husband bar hop and sleep around. This is crazy. How men can still think like this in the day and age shocks me. Women are not property.

I had to come back to this post because I was thinking about it and you know what. My own personal opinion is that it is changing the face of human through religion. I know this is a midevil line of thinking but I don't see any word of God here when it comes to treating another like a subhuman.

Thanks for posting the link;I found it very amusing and it gave me a good laugh. But what every woman does is up to her;I canot understand why people should jump up for this .If their freedom is really threatened by their husbands then they can take the case against them. The priest is just stating his observation about the high divorce rates.Noone can deny the fact that women who are educated and finanically independent opt for divorce easily and it is relatively simple for them when compared to their dependent female ancestors. People must think well before entering marriage and it would have been better if the priest had advocated against marriage for all women libbers. It would be good for both men and women to stay single if they are not able to adjust with each other. Here [as is said in the Bible] the [person who is the prime breadwinner needs that bit of extra freedom or position of authority.]
