Depression, is it all in your head?

I had someone tell me once that your life is what you make of it. If you get out of bed and think I am going to have a great day, I am so happy, blablahblah, then you will not be depressed. I do not believe this. I know that I have a chemical imbalance that makes me depressed. I can not help how I feel. That is like saying if you believe your finger won't burn when you stick it in a fire, it won't...... What do you think?

I would have to disagree as well. It's easy for someone that does not have this illness to say something like that. They have no idea. I wish it were true though. But as I said, depression is an illness. Just like any other, it's not something that you can just make go away. Treatment is needed for it. Also depression can also be genetic, just a little tidbit hehe.

I think that mental health issues are largely misunderstood. For those who don't suffer from mental health problems, it seems like an issue of perhaps self control. They often think that the depressed person should be able to just "snap out of it" because they are always able to do it. Unless you have personally felt that paralyzing sadness, you can't understand, and you certainly shouldn't judge. That being said, life IS what you make of it. It will never be perfect but the way you choose to work with your own situation can make a difference in your overall experience. I wish you the very best. Hang in there.

People tell me I am a positive person. When i am around them sure I am, but when i'm not I get very depressed. It's kind of wierd for me. For every up in my life I have 2 downs. When i go out with my friends I have a great time, like maybe say an 8 up, then when I get home I have like a 20 down. The higher the up the lower the down. I didn't use to be this way but it's been setting in over the past few years.

I don't believe that what they say is accurate either. I've been depressed for over six years and it isn't something that you can wake up and decide how you will feel that morning...it's very much an illness.

I am a highly possitive person. I have heard those same saying as well as many others since I was a sales person and had to go to many motivational speakers pitch. I am here to tell you it doesn't matter what your race, background, how much money you have, how happy your family may be or any of the other reason people will give you about why you shouldn't be depressed. I am depressed because I have been out of work for over a year now due to medical issues and my husband totally understands that part. He got a second job as well as recieves a retirement check for 20yrs in service and has a full time job during the day just to cover the bills. He tells me not to worry about it that we will get through this but it still depresses me no matter how much he tells me not to worry. You can't stop your feelings about things. NO matter how hard you try to cover them up not even can you stop the depression. I think it is something you have to work through and learn to deal with the problem or issue before you can overcome the depression and if that means taking medication to help that along then do that as well. You are far better off listening to your own body than to what other tell you about how you should be.

Ooh, yes I am in the same situation. I'm taking Zoloft, how about you? It makes me SICK when people say stuff like that ("It's all in your head!" or "It's just your attitude that gets in your way" etc.)! They just don't understand; they usually CANNOT understand, if they have never been in the same situation. We can try to explain to people that we have problems that we cannot control with just our mindset, but some people will always be close-minded, unfortunately.

depression is a treatable medical condition, mostly due to a chemical inbalance. Yes I believe life is what you make of it, and that includes if you are sick (depressed) you get treatment for it. Depression is not something anyone should e ashamed of, you should have ever be ashamed if you do not seek treatment for it.
