hi mylotters. for everyone who wants to learn a new language here are the keys: 1- use all the resources you have: internet, books, courses, classes, magazines, newspapers...etc 2- Speak without fear: "of making mistakes or shy" don't let a little fear stop you from getting what you want. you have to learn from your mistakes and do it again and again untill you do it the right way. 3- stay surrounded with that language: take notes in the language you want to learn it, put that language books around your room, listen to radio broadcasting in that language, watch news movies and documentaries. speak with your friends with that language even if they are not understand what you say. 4- Listen to native speakers as possible. 5- Listen to that language: i mean, listen to radio, speak on the phone, audio books or CD's in that language. this is different from watching TV because you can't see the person taht is speaking to you. 5- Study as often as you can: only by studying things like grammar and vocabulary and doing exercices, can you really improve your language skills. 6-Do excercises and do tests: they are not too much fun, hoewever by them you can really improve your language. if you never test yourself, you will never know how much you are progressing. 7- record and listen to yourself: nobody likes to hear their own voice on tape but tests, it is good to compare your tapes from time to time and you will surprize by the progress which you are making. 8- enjoy learning and have fun.

These are some great tips. I have always wanted to learn another language. I was thinking maybe Spanish, french or German. But I have also heard some languages are harder than others. So my question is which ones are harder than others. My children are learning some bits from there cartoons on Nick Jr. I believe this is great that they are making programs like Dora and Kai lan so that little ones like toddlers and younger can learn some Spanish and some Chinese.

So I should start with Spanish? Any good information on where to start, what kind of programs etc.? I know that learning a new language isn't easy but I think it would expand my knowledge in the languages. I know a little bit of Spanish I mean enough to be able to get a point across but a lot of it i have forgotten. I think it would be cool to know a lot of languages and be able to speak to many people.

floridia, Reinforcing point no. 2 about being BRAVE. We should never be too conscious of ourselves and be afraid of being laughed at. Our sensitivity just needs to be as thick as an onion where it is multi-layered. Great points here and I hope that anyone that is picking up a language now will read this! Kudos! For a great post!
