My mother in law gave me some rompers that my husband had worn as a baby, they were lovely, sturdy and well made.
WE passed them on to my sister in law when she had a baby.
In my drawer I have a swim suit that I bought just before I got married, it is a sort of shiny blue made of double layer material and perfectly good still.
Much ore recent swim suits lost their elasticity or became thin but that one is nearly as good as new.
What is the oldest garment that you own?
Is it a family heirloom or just a favourite to you?

That is your classic piece of clothing I guess.
Nice to be able to get things made a bit smaller so they fit right.
I think my neighbor does alterations of that kind.
She wanted to be a seamstress when she was young but she never did.
I think she is quite a needlewoman making her 3 children's clothes when they were small.

I have the christening gown that my Mother wore as a baby. It is still as beautiful as the day it was made, soft satin and lace with ribbons. It's 89 years old.

wow that sounds lovely.
We didn't have anything like that at home.
I think the old time baby clothes were sometimes very beautiful but christening gowns are extra special because of the event .I wonder if it was made from her mothers wedding gown as they used to do that as tradition in some places.

pandaeyes I still have the two little handmade baby dresses given to me fifty some years ago when I was expecting my first born. they were already used for another baby some years before and given to me in my baby shower by my best friend a fellow nurses aide. She had made them herself for her daughters first born and they had been returned to her, so she gave them to me as I was really short of money then. I cherish them for purely sentimental reasons, they remind me of her, as she has been deceased for sometime with lung cancer, and of my son who is very much alive.

That's lovely.
I love how things can jog our memories like that.
Looking at small gloves or boots in the coat cupboard can bring it all rushing back.

I had some shirts that I thought I threw out after high school. One of these shirts was purchased in 1992... I can't tell you my surprise when I saw my mother wearing it a couple of weeks ago!! It's still in fairly good shape. It wasn't my intention to keep it, and I hadn't wanted to discard it, but I gained weight towards the end of my high school career. Instead of donating them, apparently my mother scooped them up. She even has my shirt from prom!

I had a coat that I bought when I was 18 hanging in my cupboard,my daughter liked it and she wore it and wore it till it was almost falling apart so it got a lot of use.
One Christmas I found a new jacket in the shop that was just the same style so I bought it for her for a present. It lasted about a year I think.
They certainly don't seem to last like they used to.

I still have the baptism gown that I was baptized in when I was just a couple of months old, so that item is about 30 years old. It isn't a really old article of clothing, but I hope that it will be able to serve as an heirloom when my own children have kids of their own. I was unable to use it for either of them because they were both older than I was when I was baptized as a child. Other than that I don't really have anything that is old.

Thank you for the best response.
My daughter and my son actually both used the crib from my childhood until we moved into our own house last year and then my son started using the crib that my grandmother had gotten for my daughter to use at her house when Kathryn was a baby.
Come to think of it, when we were emptying things from my grandmother's house after she passed away we came across a couple of pieces of clothing that she still had in her wardrobe from when my cousins and myself were children and we gave those to Kathryn to wear until she outgrew them.

Wont it be lovely if one of your grand kids can use them one day.
My in laws kept a few things I think but they had 5 children so ,much of it was already redistributed. We did use the crib from my husbands babyhood.
Mostly the clothes were handed down until they were too worn so my husbands old rompers were a very rare find.
We passed them on to another sister with a baby boy .
