Toyota, "Unintended Acceleration"?

My sympathy to Toyota for its current troubles! It is sad to see a mega company suddenly disintegrating. I have pondered over the “faulty pedal” and “sticky mat” problems with Toyota vehicles and find myself with various speculations: 1). What properties have the materials used for the floor mat in Toyota vehicles that they would cause the floor mat to become that sticky and actually hold a pedal captive? 2). Toyota in about 2000 started using an Electronic Throttle Control System which uses a computerized sensor to determine acceleration depending upon applied gas pedal pressure. It is alleged that this Electronic Control System can cause a vehicle to suddenly accelerate without pressure applied to the gas pedal (I am not sure if Toyota made this assertion, but one lawsuit recently filed in Texas makes this claim). Now, I am a Techie and matters involving Electronics and/or Engineering Technology naturally get my attention: A). True, Electronic devices can get in a run-away mode causing them to have a mind of their own. Because of this tendency, I think that anyone using an electronic device for guarantee should provide a back-up safety in the event of defectiveness (though a runaway mode could result from sheer accident). B). If allegation is accurate, then did Toyota have knowledge that materials with gluing or magnetic capabilities had been used in fabricating its floor mat or pedals – materials that would otherwise be safe under normal conditions but unsafe under certain conditions? And if so, had the consumers been properly notified of this potential danger? As sad and grave as this situation is, I somehow cannot stop fantasizing intentional sabotage of the Toyota company.

I don't know much about it the specifics but find it strange that this all went down after the virtual collapse of U.S. automakers and the government take over of GM. Just saying it is a strange coincidence.

That's not all, N4life: A US Toyota contractor is under suspicion for possibly manufacturing at least one of the alleged faulty parts in Toyota vehicles. If our suspicions are true, then this may explain why the government suddenly wants to negotiate with Toyota. The entire Toyota situation smells of a sabotage.

I thought about that too. The big thing to me is how much press it's been getting. I haven't seen a recall get this much attention in over 10 years. The last time the media made this big a deal was when Firestone tires on Fords were shredding on the road.

I commented to the wife about that when we watched some of the nightly news a few days ago. It seems not only is it on the news all the time but it often the main story. There have been other recalls for serious safety issues that seem to be made less of an issue. I remember the Firestone fiasco, and thinking it seemed a more legit big deal but than who nows maybe someone at Firestone had made an enemy of the wrong person.

One of the other flaws in the Toyota is that it doesn't have a fail safe device to stop acceleration by hitting the brake peddle. Some thought that what was happening is that people were hitting the resume on their cruise control thus making the car lung and accelerate. Just like your cruise control on your family car, as soon as you hit the brake is turns it off. But, many have said that this didn't happen, even when they hit the brake it still kept going. I don't think Toyota has a clue as to what is wrong, and I don't think that it was sabotage, this has been going on for years. If someone was doing this on purpose then they would have been frustrated already and done worse. When it comes to notification Toyota completely ignored the problem for years, and refused to accept there was an issue. Only when the US officials went to Japan to explain to them what was going to happen if they didn't do something did they take action. This is why many feel that Toyota could be fined for their lack of action in light of overwhelming proof that something was wrong.

Well let's hope that it is not sabotage, because it sure does smell like sabotage to me.

Toyota is a company which start to grow very fast, with the consumers around the world preferring Toyota cars in increasing numbers.Few years back the company entered the Indian market properly and it was widely welcomed and accepted. The demand for their cars grew in large numbers. Therefore to meet the demand they had to step up production in that area. The company hired many contractors for their work. Their product suppliers had to chosen in a hurry because of the deadlines.Which made the Toyota parts and accessories not up to the standard. Which lead to the current situation of the company. The companies image has been damaged and they will have to do a lot of hard work to come up again.

Interesting you would mention the various Toyota contractors. I think one US contractor is currently being suspected for manufacturing faulty parts.
