mean kids...

Lately my 7-year-old niece came home crying. She is in Grade 1 and she recounted that her classmates are bullying her. She said that one classmate had been telling everyone not to be friends with her. Then another kid said that they have a "plot to kill her". So I said, what? Seven-year-old kids already have such terms as "plot to kill" someone? Where did they learn this? As background, my niece is the only kid in the house and so we dote on her. She used to be very sweet but now I think she has picked up the meanness of her classmates. She would snap at us and try to act cool with us. She is trying to be mean too. Why is this? Have you noticed this with your own kids? Why are kids nasty or mean? Are they victims of such at home? Are the people in their homes mean with them?

When I was being bullied as a child, I would snap at my parents, especially my mother. Your best bet is to attack the first problem that is affecting this little girl. Go to her teacher and tell her these students names and what they've said. Insist you want something to be done about it, and you wish to also know what will be done!
