how do you open" you have 1 alert'?

I have been getting alerts once in a while but have not been able to open them after the new upgrade of the website took place- can anyone guide me how to go about this or why this is happening?

Those Alerts have probably expired. One of them warned us that myLot was going to be offline for a short time to implement the upgrade. Now there is no longer need for that Alert to still be available because it has already happened.
To see the Alerts that are still available, go to your messages and you will see, in small print, 'View Alerts' and to the right is the link which will open it.
