A dear friend of mine is dealing with Social Security for her husbands disability. They've been getting monthly notices from SS. (Humm, maybe the initials fit!) The notices state that due to the fact that HE is currently in jail his SSI is going to be stopped. They have made trips down to our local Social Security office to prove that the husband is NOT IN JAIL. The problem is cleared up for a month then another notice arrives, since he was released from jail in CA and was arrested in Arizona, his SSI is being terminated. They make the trip down to the local Social Security office to prove he is NOT IN JAIL! It's cleared up for a month and another notice comes, this time it is because the husband is currently in jail and he was still receiving benefits they owe Social Security nearly $1900! Usually this only happens once a year and they go in a prove that he isn't in jail and it clears it up for another year.
HE STILL ISN'T IN JAIL NOR HAS HE EVER BEEN IN JAIL!
He has plenty of witnesses to prove that he isn't nor has been in jail.
The odd part of the story, the husband's social security number is one digit different from the guy that has been in jail in both states! In the mean time each time they get one of these notices the wife panics because they need the money to pay their rent and cover expenses-plus the husband recently had open heart surgery and needs his medical from SSI. The cost of their making the trip to the nearest social security office is over $15.00, which would provide them with extra food.
Can anyone out there spell Government stupidity? I am beginning to believe that due to cutbacks in both the government and the zoo's budgets that Social Security is hiring Chimpanzees to do the data entry! No offense to anyone out there that might work for Social Insecurity, but you have to admit that something like this gets out of hand! I am drafting the letter of appeal for the wife, and I am also drafting letters to our congress people and representatives.
Anyone else have such stupid problems with Social Insecurity?

Well I don't think I need to tell you my recent frustrations about how Social Security was fouling me up. Back in November they sent a letter to me needing to hear from me as they were reviewing my eligibility for continued benefits. So began calling my SSA office and all I succeeded in doing was leaving messages with my caseworker, I even sent in documentation to verify my status. Never got one call back...then in January got a second letter, a repeat of the first that they needed to hear from me, like duh?
Then in early this month get the whammy letter saying since they hadn't heard from me they were stopping my benefits next month.......can we say panic time? But what happened to my recorded messages I was making since November, my documentation. Anyway got in touch with that representative of my Congressman and she got the ball rolling and as far as I know my benefits are back--but yes think they have monkeys working for the SSA

Wow that is terrible and an error made like that is certainly neglect on the Government part
I hope that this has been sorted out and never happens again and I think your Friend should take this further and report it as it is normal for the same error to be made all the time

I think most of us know that Pyewacket has ongoing trouble with the SS too... wonder if they found a lawyer who would take them for a percentage of the reward they could try suing them for harassment and monetary loss because they are always having to prove something they should never be dealing with...
