will keep doctor away! I just read about the wonderful things popcorn can do fot your gastrointestinal tract. Fiber (we all know by now how important this is)and it also has a lot of magnesium. From this study, it seems that if you eat your popcorn twice a week, you can avoid having diverticules in the future. Popcorn is not a no-no for diets, except if you eat butter with popcorn instead of the other way around. By the way, don´t use too much salt either if you have kidney problems or high blood pressure. I love popcorn so I´ll start with this new (old) road to health from today on. It does make a lot of sense, don´t you think? How do you feel with having pop corn out of the black list? I felt elated. Do you know of other ex bad food turned good? Share: we need the knowledge.

That´s because we are old, Jo. We weren´t raised in the concept that smoking is bad for your health either. I still remember those wonderful Lucky Strikes, no filter, of my youth! A lot of food has been banned (and has come back in glory) since we listened to our Elvis in the radio. Butter was changed to margerine (I didn´t) and then they discovered that margerine was still worse than butter. Eggs were banned for sometime ( I love them), now it seems that eggs help get high GOOD cholesterol levels. Popcorn makes you fat. That was why it was in the "bad" list. I agree. Everything makes you fat if you can´t do much exercise and eat more than what you should. But one thing I´m sure of: I will not eat anything because it´s healthy. I´ll eat because I like it. Hug!

Wow that is great since I love popcorn! Will have to tell my fiancé when he gets in because he loves popcorn too and certainly wouldn't object to eating it twice a week I'm sure.

I´m sure none of us would objectto eating popcorn twice a week. Imagine yourself watching TV with your healthy popcorn and that angelic feeling you´re doing ok, instead of feeling guilty for indulging on popcorn.

Very true. Question is though does it take away some of the fun/appeal knowing that it can be good for you rather than it being one of your naughty indulgences?

Don´t tell your fiancé, then. Don´t spoil the fun for him, just I did it for you.

Well, this is definitely a good news for me, because I like popcorn too. However, I only consume popcorn when I watch movie in the cinema. The popcorn that they are selling is quite sweet. Therefore, I dare consume too much of it, worrying that it might elevate the blood sugar level. I think the best popcorn is those that are homemade or steamed one in the night market.

Ya, that's a good idea to get healthy popcorn. Unlike me, I usually have to buy the popcorn from the cinema food and beverage stall. It's just way too sweet. Besides, it's expensive too. Happy posting and have a nice day!

I'm glad to hear that good news, because next to coffee, cokes, chocolate (first), popcorn is one of my 'must haves'. Glad to hear about the fiber, because I always felt like I didn't do enough fiber. Also, what is diverticules?

I think popcorn is good if you only have it without the butter and the salt. I do still like to have a little bit of butter on the popcorn. I find that it really does enhance the flavor of the popcorn overall. I don't have any popcorn at home right now. But I will be sure to buy some if they go on sale.

Good news! I am aware of the fiber, but I did not know about magnesium. I wonder if microwave popcorn is as healthy? :D

That is a splendid idea! lol. Of course, microwave popcorn has additives that homemade does not have, so I merely don't read the labels so I don't know what I am ingesting that may be questionable. :D I did have some last night. For some reason, I began to crave it after I read this thread.................

Wow...I missed that broadcast about popcorn...I wouldn't have given it up though, unless folks were actually dying, on the spot from it. I think every warning that is issued should be investigated, most things shouldn't be taken on face value. For instance, I never gave up butter or eggs and just didn't believe that the food itself was unhealthy...I think the problem lies with the source. For example, I purchase eggs that come from chickens that are referred to as 'free range'. Any food that has been allowed to grow in as natural an environment as possible, has to be better for us. Any food that hasn't been exposed to radiation, hormones, insecticides...just gotta be 'WAY MORE' nutritious. I have been around a while and I can remember when food actually tasted different, my son eats instant oatmeal out of a package...GOSH, is it awful...but he likes it. Me, give me organic oats that has to be cooked on the stove and I am as happy as a LARK! But, back to popcorn...I gotta agree with you gals/guys...it's all in the preparation...8o)

I´m old enough to have had tomatoes that tasted like tomatoes. True, they had a worm once in a while. But I´m sure that there are no worms in tomatoes not because they are too bad. I agree with you that the real eggs and other food are much better. If you can pop your own pop corn (I buy the kernels and do it in a heavy pot) it´s helthier and better tasting. Take care!

That is a good information that popcorn has a good healthy benefits when it comes to the digestive system. However, they said that popcorn can increase the weight of person if taken much. I agree that less salt is better and no butter if possibly can because if you have eaten it with butter and too salt. Although it can help your digestive system, the effect of butter and salt can affect your kidney and liver. so better take popcorn as bare food for the purpose of helping your body to become more healthy than adding other not necessary foods which will make it unhealthy for you.

Hi Genericbe, You are right. The story talked about popcorn, but not of the aditives many people use. It´s the same with most of the cereals that people from the States eat. If you read the labels, you will notice that almost all of them are ladden with sugar. White sugar is more unhealthy that the health that the cereal has. But you can make homemade popcorn easily and add a little bit of salt or sugar. Pop corn can be eaten alone with milk and it is a better cereal than all those expensive ones you get at stores. My grandchidren eat all sorts of cereals based on rice. I grew up with cooked rice with milk, a little sugar and some grond cinnamon on top. YUMMY!!! There are other uses of corn that mean more fiber for you. In the corn season, I buy corn on the cob, cook it (10 min is enough in hot water) and add a little salt and butter to it. It makes a filling lunch with enough fiber and carbohidrates. Most of the times, the food is right, the aditives aren´t. Take care!

I eat popcorn a lot, sometimes even every day one pack, I make them in the microwave. I really love the taste and it's actually much healthier than other salty junk foods such as potato chips. I never felt like popcorn was bad for me because it has a lot of fiber and we don't digest it whole, so our bodies don't absorb everything either. I really like this news that it's actually very healthy to eat it. I never eat popcorn with butter, I always choose the low fat version.
