What is difference between optical and digital zoom in handycams?

Optical Zoom is similiar to analog cameras whish use the lens to bring a subject into focus and closer.
Digital zoom draggs the picture in whilst dealing with pixels

Optical zoom is the lens actually working to move towards the object. It would be like you walking up to the object, you can still see fine detail. Digital zoom is 'Cropping', like you taking a picture, cutting out the area you want to bring closer, and stretch it back to the right size, witch will make it pixelated, and you won't be able to see fine detail. My suggestion, turn your digital zoom off...you can always 'crop' later, on your computer or photo kiosk.
