DH and I always used to lease cars and we traded them in as soon as we hit 50,000 miles. Ten years ago or so, we kept a car long enough to buy out the lease and we continued to put the car payment away and kept the car until we had enough saved to pay cash for it. We've purchased three cars that same way and I don't think that I would ever finance a car again. We're retired now and the Xterra that we bought in 2006 has 12,000 miles on it so I suspect that we will keep it for a very long time. At times in our life when money has been tight, the car payment is one less thing that we've had to worry about.

...Hi there LaurenInLA, Hope thimgs are going well for you. I think your plan has been a success. Car payments are a pain each month, and the car depreciates as they say as soon as you drive it off the lot. So your success is admirable, and being able to pay cash for your car must have given you both a great feeling. Now a days the only car I will buy is one which is used and which I can pay off in about three payments and I am free. Thanks for your input. Always nice to hear from you.

I am definitely a keeper. Unless the car has shown to be completely unreliable, I keep them. I love it when I have no monthly car payment, especially now adays you can not even get a new car for less than 350 a month. I had a Geo Tracker, for almost 12 years. Matter of fact I would still have it, except my husband, kids, groceries, and dogs have all out grown it. I loved that thing, and the kid that bought it still drives it all around town.

...Hi missliss08, I think it makes one feel great as well, when that last coupon is sent in and you actually own the car. That Geo Tracker was evidently a solid car. Gave you your monies worth. I had a Honda Accord that I bought brand new, I put about 130,000 miles on it. Things started to happen to it and I got tired of the repairs and I sold it. The next owner is probably still driving it as well, because he was a mechanic and could fix it himself. Thanks for your response, take it easy.

...Hi standbymeforever, Interesting. In the past I think I learned that leasing an automobile made more sense than buying, unless you were going to keep the car for a very long time. As cars depreciate so fast, I think they said, it would pay you to lease and keep getting another car when the lease was over. I also think , if I remember correctly, the leasing company took care of the repairs. Which makes it a good deal. I have always purchased the cars that I have had. Thanks for your response, take care.
