How do you suck yours?

According to the novelist Elizabeth Gaskell in her 1840s novel "Cranford" eating oranges in company i.e. at the dinner table, was considered vulgar and ladies retreated to the seclusion of their bedrooms rather than be seen sucking and eating their fruit. How do you eat your orange? Are you delicate? Peeling the fruit with a knife and using a fork to eat each segment. Or do you just gets tuck in tearing off the skin and biting into the flesh underneath?

Not so delicate. Cut into triangles, make a big grin consisting of skin, eat everything but the grin.

Next they'll say people slice their banannas and use a fork to eat them. I pel it by hand and eat it with my fingers as I do all fruits I eat. A fork for fresh fruits is like a fork for soups. As always.... HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

I had a vegetable soup tonight that was so thick that I needed a fork! LOL.

That is how thick I usually make my soups, too. They end up more like a stew. But there is nothing worse than soup that is too watery.

well, tearing off the skin and then breaking the segments down and eating those with my fingers, but not eating it like an apple...

good for Grandpa Bob I am in his following as I just peel an orange, bite into the sweet lucious fruit and enjoy ,occasionally mopping up my chin with a napkin while eating. No la de da delicate silly ways of eating for me, I am an American after all and we do things a bit differently anyway. What on earth is vulgar about eating fruit and enjoying it? I do not understand at all.

I guess that the 1840s were a different time and they had manners that we find strange today Hatley.

Saviour-V teleports in... For a moment there, I thought you were alluding to the phrase "teaching one's grandmother to suck eggs"...^_^; Well, when it comes to oranges, it depends on the kind of orange. Satsumas and mandarin oranges are easy - just peel them, and enjoy. But for the more difficult ones, usually the Sunkist sort, a knife is the weapon of choice for dealing with them. In their case, a few well-placed cuts will split them open. The instrument of choice to eat oranges with? Saviour-V raises his right hand... Use whatever God gave ya, I say....^_~ On a side note, it is possible to merely skin a Sunkist orange and enjoy the citrus-y insides like you would a mandarin or satsuma, but it takes a bit more effort. Oh, and the seeds are another concern. Saviour-V grins, and teleports out...

Saviour-V teleports back in for a moment... Odd. Apparently, myLot sent a notification that said my answer here was deleted, because the original discussion was deleted. Hope this thread isn't scheduled for myLot maintenance. I think they've gotten a bit trigger-happy since my long absence from here. Have they? Saviour-V teleports out again...

Well, I love oranges..I will use my fingers to slowly peel away the outer layer of the peeling and then I will gently take the orange and separate into segments. Then I take each luscious aromatic segment and peel open the skin and then greedily eat the succulent fruit beneath. My tongue swirling over the juices as the pulp burst in my mouth as I chew, savoring the flavor of every bite....Hey so not fair.. I want a big juicy orange right now..and no way to the store to get it.

I don't eat many oranges or fruit that needs to be peeled like that, but I usually just tear into it with my nails, and then piece the thing apart. Of course whether I am making fresh orange juice or just going to eat the fruit, I usually roll it on the cabinet with my palm to loosen the juice!

Hi, p1kef1sh. Usually, I will just peel off of the orange peel on the outside of it off. Then I will, pull the orange apart in the middle. Then I will pull back the orange to make it come into sections. Then I will take the sections apart and eat it. It is so good to eat it this way.

Um, the last one! Interesting what used to be considered vulgar. I'm a big orange fan, and couldn't be doing with retreating anywhere to eat one. I can kind of understand how it would have looked in those more polite and ladylike times though! And imagine all the mess sucking an orange would cause to those big flouncy dresses, I'm not very delicate, no. Maybe I should try using a knife and fork to eat my orange...

I once went to a very posh do with lots of Ambassadors (of the diplomatic variety not the Indian restaurant) and they gave us a kind of orange toffee apple and a teaspoon to eat it with. That was fun! Very hard to eat without drawing attention to yourself. LOL.

Wow, a toffee-orange sounds nice! Not sure how it would hold up structurally, with the soft orange in the middle and hard toffee on the outside, but interesting. It does sound a challenge to eat. Maybe it was a test...

Men eating banana with a fork and retreating to eat a lousy piece of orange... come on, it's just a fruit, now really ! I eat them both regular - peel with my hands the skin and then open it with my hands and eat it slice by slice...

Hello, Pikey. Well, I like my oranges squeezed, as I'm sure you already know. I don't actually eat oranges - I have freshly squeezed juice every morning, and I'm partial to a slice in my vodka, but that's it. I have been known to nibble on a satsuma, but never the big stuff.

With oranges, I just peel them and eat them one segment at a time, I don't suck on them or bite them off though, I take each segment and toss it into my mouth hehe. Then I spit out the seeds.

Cut it into quarters, then stick the quarter in your mouth like a big orange smile! Then you bite through it and peel the peel away chew up the pulp and spit out the pips. This is the only way to go, letting the juice flow through your fingers making a big sticky mess. Yum Yum!
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Very nice way to start a discussion! I eat my orange how ever I feel at the time. My favorite way is to peel it, cut it into bite sized pieces and cut up a banana and eat them together. But sometimes I may peel it and pull it apart and bite into it while sucking up the juices. Other times I may slice it into about 6 wedges and bite into it and pull it off of the rind!
@p1kef1sh (45681)

That sounds a very civilised way to eat them. As Annie says. Good in a drink too.

interesting how they viewed eating oranges - says quite a lot about what they spent lots of time thinking about if it sprung to mind immediately. now as a rabbit i don't actually eat lots of fruit - too much sugar. but when i do i gnaw through everything, i don't have opposable thumbs so this is my only option. my favourites are apples not oranges for this very reason.

Middle class women in those days had plenty of time to think about eating oranges! Do you mix lettuce etc with your apples. Although when I kept rabbits we were told not to feed too much lettuce. Costs a fortune in new underwear!

What is the use of fork and knife for such a nice and tender fruit orange. Just peel it by your hands and eat it one by one..:-) so simple. An orange is one of nature's Power Fruits. Peeling the skin off with your fingers or the spoon will make removing the outer peel very clean and easily done. Continue peeling along the underside of the orange peel until all the peel has all been removed. After all the skin is cleared off, you can throw the outer peel away. While chewing, it may be best to remove the seeds found in the orange. If you are using knife then this is how you can eat orange. Place the orange on a plate. Take a knife and cut it in half, starting with the ends or the stem part down. Cut again in half or quarters. Continue until the orange is all cut in slices. Hold with your hands, near the skin, and just put your mouth onto the orange itself, and bite it off the skin. Finally enjoy the lovely juicy taste!

How funny! Allah has given us beautiful hands to grab our solid foods well and savour them to our heart's content. Why some people bother about excessive use of spoon, fork and knife? I just grab an orange, peel it with my fingers and chew the segments to my heart's content enjoying the juice inside. I don't like to have them with any spoon. Have a natural eating.

I east them with my fingers too. But 150 years ago in Europe oranges were a luxury and something to be savoured.

I cut oranges with knife then strip the fruit from the peel using my teeth, very fast and effective method all the good part is definitely gone and it only takes a second or two.
