Treadmill, or Running Outside?

Canada

Recently, I bought my first treadmill. It's not that great, but I found that I been running on it more often than I have been running outside. Personally, I feel that running on the treadmill does not provide as much of a challenge as running outside, where the terrain constantly changes (it's just that I can jog for a longer time without getting tired, even if I crank up the incline). Treadmills are WAY more convenient though, and they are better for bad knees. That's my excuse to myself now, but since the weather's been turning for the better, I was wondering how many of you prefer treadmills, and how many run outside? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each for you?

Ohhh, did you decide already? :O Yep, a treadmill is a really good investment. I love how they tell you how much calories you burn at the end...but it's a gross estimate.

Hi lescribbles! Well each has their own disadvantages and advantages itself, i much more prefer running outside, the advantages is more plenty rather than treadmill, first you don't have to spend money for buying treadmill, because treadmill machine is rather expensive, and need cost of maintenance, second by running outside we can breath with a fresh air since it was doing outside, running outside force us to have maximum effort, because you have to go back to your house if you are gone too far but this can be the advantages of getting treadmill if you already feel exhausted

I think that running outside is great because it is far less boring than running on the treadmill but I think that the treadmill is a better workout because it keeps you running at a consistent speed. Does your treadmill come with programs? That might be the key to getting the variety that you need. More often than not when I do a treadmill exercise, I don't run but follow the following program: 1st 5 minutes walk at 0% incline for 5 minutes to warm up speed is usually 3.0, 4 sets of the following: 15% incline at 3.0 mpg for 2 minutes, 1% incline at 4.0 mph for 2 minutes followed by 1 minute at 1% incline at 3.0 mph. The last 5 minutes of this 30 minute workout is at 0% incline at 3.3 mph. This burns about 200 calories in 30 minutes and I do this 2-3 times per day. I picked up the workout from self magazine and it's one of the best and most efficient workouts that I've ever had. Of course, you can increase the speeds on these workouts to suit your fitness level.

I prefer running outside. it's cheaper and as you said offers mroe varied terrain which require more of my muscles to work to maintain my pace and balance. aslo, i tend to be more motivated when i am actually going somewhere and have a goal rather than just running in the same place. Running outside also gives me the cahnce to get some much needed fresh air.

When I was back home I always prefer running outside than in the gym. Now that I am in a hot country, I like running on the treadmill more. One good thing bout using the treadmill is that you can watch your favorite shows/movies while running.

Select an exercise pattern to suit your life style. All of us have different life styles and professions so there is no sense in trying to follow the book strictly. Try and follow an exercise routine that is suitable for you. You have to understand that even more important than the exercise it is sticking to it. So unless you choose something that can suit your life style, you are not going to stick on to it.

Well, I usually do a lot of walking at first, and then I step it up to jogging. I like to dance and practice self-defense. I used to weight 220 lbs, and now I weigh 165 lbs. I did it by walking, jogging, dancing, and learning self-defense. I dieted as well, but the exercising is what really killed the pounds.

My hubby and I visit the gym all winter long and come summer time we prefer to walk outside. I typically do the elliptical at the gym, I love it! But there is something about being outside when you can. I would so much rather walk outside than go to the gym in the summertime when the weather is warm!

Both are good options. U can run outside on sunny days and smell fresh air and see the good sights around or u can stay at home on rainy days or on days where u feel lazy to go out and still do some workouts using the treadmill. The time u need to do each effectively really depends on what makes u feel comfortable without overdoing it.You know just enjoying it with no limits as to how long or how short the workout time will be.

I prefer running outside. I personally like it better because you get bored so much easier on a treadmill. Also, I do cross country, and when you run on a treadmill all you see is numbers/speed and you're not thinking about how you feel. When you're running outside, you don't know how long you've been running and how fast. So, you rely on how you're feeling, so you actually seem to laste longer. It also helps to run with a partner because one of you will set a pace, and the other will work harder to meet it, making you a better runner. THOUGH, Treadmills are very good things for when its a rainy day or there is snow outside. They are great to have, because they still alow you to run pretty well, but if I had a choice to run outside or indoors i would run outside.
