Never use a u.s. cell phone in Canada or Mexico to call back to the United states. A friend of mine told me that, a friend of his being charged over $1,000 for a mere minutes of call. Even though he try to dispute that charge against his cellphone provider.
You might consider using a pre - paid international phone call, or buy a pre - paid sim card from canada or mexico. Better yet, sign up with pingo.com to arrange an international calls before hand.

I've never had to call internationally that I know of. However, I know that in general regardless if you are using a US phone out of the states, international rates are anoyingly rediculous. I remember recieving a call from a woman claiming to being in deland, but I was charged ten bucks for the call. They apparently were using a blocked internotional number and I was charged international rates for it. All for a wrong number too.

Can you dispute it? Because you have no idea who calling from, and you definitely don't want to pay for it. Don't you? That is ridiculous.

The only way you can dispute a charge from a recieved call is if the phone wasn't in your position at the time. Which actually it was since I was on the bus. Quite often blocked numbers aren't easily traced so no telling where it came from.
Besides desputing incoming calls is kind of pointless since I allow incoming calls. I have no way to prove the incoming call wasn't someone I wanted to talk to.
I paid the bill anyway. No need in worrying about it it happened over a year ago. I was just shocked to see the charge and when I checked my bill that was the only number I couldn't account for. though while cheep I still thought it a bit outragous.

Almost all cell phone companies charge international roaming charges when you bring your cell phone over seas. Your friend should have read up on that before start using the phone. I'm with T-Mobile & if I were to go to Italy & make a phone call back to the States, I'd be charged $1.29/minute plus taxes. And even that is because T-Mobile is pretty big in Europe & they have roaming agreements with cell phone companies over there. If I were to goto a country that doesn't have roaming agreements with T-Mobile as a corporate, they could charge me anywhere between $4 - $8/minute or more, as long as my phone would work in that country. If I were to go to Korea, they do have GSM network but the rate is not listed on T-Mobile's web-site. I can find out by calling t-mobile. Each country is different in roaming charges. May be your friend got hit with one of the higher roaming countries. Live & learn, eh?
