Are women really worth much less then men?

Discrepancy in the earnings of men and women! Do females really deserve less? These are some of the question that effective female professionals have in their mind and to some extend it affects their self-esteem. Companies have, by far, put priority on their male workforce during yesterdays but there is a changing scene where females are coming forth to work and even proving to be better than some of their male co-workers. It is great for the female workforce in general but the question that needs answer is 'Are we females worth less than the male worker for doing the same kind of work?" The matter of pay is a very private issue....almost a state secret between the accounts department and the employee. or so I think. I feel it is a rude invasion of my privacy when someone makes sly remarks and queries on my earnings. It's a sensitive subject and not open to any Tom, D$ck, Harry, Mary, Jane or Alice. It's a guarded secret and a guessing game as to who is earning what. So, unless you have a pretty good idea (possible in government jobs) you need to check your facts before you arm yourself with a battleaxe for equal pay for the sexes! How is it in your country, do women get paid equally as the men?

hi zandi458 I am here in the US and no not always maybe in some places but for the most part the pay for women is less, somtimes just a little sometimes a lot, and for the same work done. Orderlies way back when I was working as a nurses aid made from ten to fifty dollars more on their bi monthly paychecks this I knew because I was a nurses aide who married an orderly. we both did the same things, same job descriptions but he was a man , and I just a woman. this is not fair and it does not seem to have changed a whole lot even today. I have not checked the facts but have talked to people who are working in the same jobs and the women made less than the men almost always.

Surprising there is still discrepancies in the treatment of women employees in an advance country like US. It is not so obvious in my country but I believe some employees are also treating their employees unfairly.

Hi zandi, I live in Canada and I think women have made hughe strides here in the past few years. I think that equal pay for equal work is pretty much the norm here now and I feel that it's as good as anywhere in the world. I certainly believe that it should be that way everywhere. Blessings.

Personally it would be nice if women could make some of the type of incomes with some jobs like men can. In reality I think too many think Men deserve it more, as women could never achieve that. When in reality I think it should be more equality for earning chances and not just limit it to a simple few. Here in the US they prove it time and time again that women will never make as much as men, but I do agree that overall, earnings should be kept more of a secretive thing to keep down the fights and arguments about such things as well.

I have stayed out of the workforce, in that I have never worked FOR someone else, and I refuse to do so. My husband and I have been talking about starting up our own business. We are really interested in starting a business that we can run together, and be partners, as opposed to either one of us working FOR someone.

I too have left the employment world to run my own business. It is more satisfying to be your own employee that comes with hard work but good earnings.

Maybe lawyers but in other work forces I doubt it. KNow for sure when you go tto be a welder you dont get the same pay! AS an electrician you have to work your way up but when topped out you get same pay. I have seen no woman in electronics design only men so dont know there. But most do not get equal pay. and that just chaps me!

It can be tough but if you know it it can work out real good My daughter did sign work for a company and it was pretty easy only some lifting a leg or something to weld together but ya have clamps and stuff to hold in place. Probably no woman ever thought about it but my hubby said women ate beter welders for they have a more steady hand. \ and I lobve it and love to make pretty welds so no one would have to buff it most I have seen when I look on thing I know that are welded can tell a man did it as its not pretty and looks like bird dropping lolololol

I have not seen or heard of any woman welder in my country. It sounds to be a tough job and women in this line should be compensated equally with the men.

When you account for all attributes, women receive the same amount of pay as men, in the US. So that's not a problem here anymore.

Reading from the earlier responses here, it is not what I understand from them. There is still discrimination in the workforce in US like any other countries in the world.

Your views are quite logic and I couldn't find any loopholes to debate with you here. I agree fully with your reasoning.

Sort of. If you go out looking for an example of discrimination, you'll always find it. There's always going to be someone somewhere who doesn't like X people, and discriminates against X people. That's always going to be the case. However, in a more general sense, from the perspective of the country as a whole, no there is no discrimination going on. Yes, there are people who claim there is by saying "equal work for equal pay". The problem with 'equal work for equal pay' is, it doesn't count education, work experience, or dedication to the job. A man will often work many hours of over time, work on the weekends, and fly to other places. If a woman has to drop the kids off at school, and pick them up after work, and can't come in on the weekends... then the reason she's not paid as much as a man, is not because of gender, but because the other person works more. Another problem is education. In many cases men get more certifications, degrees, and so on. Finally, women have this big time off called pregnancy. They become less physically useful for several months, and then disappear for a year with the baby. Now that's all fine, but lets say you and a man start at a job, and work 5 years. However you have 3 kids in during that time, and disappear for a year each time. At 5 years out, how much work experience does he have? Five years. How much experience do you have? Two years. You think your going to have the same pay as him? Now when you take into account these various attributes, a women that has the same amount of eduction, same dedication, and same real work experience, is paid exactly the same as a man. There is no real difference in pay between men and women in the US.

We have laws in my country which ensure that men and women should be treated equal even when it comes to salaries. There should not be any discrepancies between the salary of men and women. However I suspect that companies exert their pressure on women and prefer men to women when it comes to employment. Employing men means paying less money on maternity leave or pregnancy leave. Some companies do it subtly others are more blatant. To answer your question “Are we females worth less than the male worker for doing the same kind of work?"I don’t think that women are worth less than men. Both have brains and do have talents to accomplish the required task. So I am totally against discrimination when it comes to employment and distinction between the sexes.

I really hate gender discrimination, it is so unfair at times. But I have to say these things are quite less at this generation than before. With regard to the pay here in my country I am not so sure about it. However, if I will only base it on my experience so far I have not encountered any of it. Sometimes me and my colleagues would compare our payslips and we saw that there was no discrepancies. Probably it happens in other field but not mine. But there is some discrimination in the job itself. There are times that they would prefer males, especially in sales, rather than women. In this aspect, I couldn't understand why coz women can definitely do it too and can be excellent at times. Today, we are into Women Empowerment and show the other sexes that we are as good as them.

Gender discrimination should never happen in this age anymore as we women are no more regarded as only slaves in our house but are out in the open working hand in hand with men to earn a living.

Of course we are not worth less. Except possibly in the minds of some men. It's still not equal in my country, I believe, but it's much closer than it used to be.

i guess we have equal rights for both sexes. it is a matter of who held the position. like in our office, we have a lady chief. and in the other field office, they got a man. they both held the same position and they have the same salary. and mind you, the head of our country is a lady.

I salute your country for producing two great women leaders. It shows women have power to rule a country without fear or favor and this should apply in the workforce too. Men and women should be treated equally as we can excel in any fields if given the opportunity.

Hi zandi! Here in the US, I think that things have definitely changed a great deal since I first started out in the workforce over 35 years ago! Back then men definitely did make more money then women did, even for the same jobs! But, also back then women didn't always have the same opportunites as men did! Then as the years have gone by and the workplace has changed and more and more women have decided to work because of the necessity or having a two income family or single moms raising kids women have fought their way up the corporate ladder! I have seen such a drastic change throughout the years, although there is still room for growth as far as women are concerned! As as for the "secret of ones paycheck", that will always be guarded! I was told in many of my jobs that I was never to disguss my salary with anyone in my office or I would be fired! And, no I wasn't working in a government position, just in some miserable law firms!

Same scenario is happening in my country. Where women used to be house bound are now holding important positions in the workforce. Since women are more vocal these days their demand for equality are well met and definitely they deserved it as women are no less compared to men in all departments.

Hi zandi, I live and work in the United States and men and women are paid equally, although there has been a lot of speculations about it, but nothing really concrete, but you really never know because in salary matters no one supposed to ask you or said anything about how much you make, which I consider that it is a non sense. But that is just my opinion. I don't expect everybody to agree with me. But years ago, women would make way less money than men and they were consider less valuable in their job, they we only good for certain tasks, during the last decades the society has changed a great deal, at least in western cultures, so now men and women have been reaching more equality in society.

Having spent 30 years in the Federal Government (as you noted), what we're paid is open to everyone, including your staff, the public... All they need to know is one's grade and about how many years he/she has served and they can guess the rest. But having said that, is there discrimination between the sexes. I say, it still exists in Government, in spite of the Government's EEO and EO policies. Women still don't fill the higher ranks of Government...they're either not hired or promoted as often as the men.

The salary scale for government staff is an open book. Working in government departments is quite stable but I've heard that promotion takes a long time to come. And sometimes needs political influence to reach the top. It happen in my country where the minority race can only dream of heading a department even though having scrolls of degrees but because of red tapes he remain frozen in her/his position.

I think we are all created equally rather people go by that or not is one thing but i dont think god would appreciate that fact that people actually would think that male or female is worth less then the other. Im far from being the religous type but i do believe that we are all created equall

I would say that it depends on the type pf the job you do. Some jobs pay less to women as they permit some concessions for women. For example: Women need not stay late for some jobs though jobs demand it. So it depends on the ytype of the job. Some jobs may be strenuous for females and so men will have to do the major part as carrying things such as in physical work. So i do not see anything wrong if men are paid more.

It can't be viewed in that way. Once absorbed in any kind of jobs, there shouldn't be double standard in treating employees. Women in most cases can handle whatever jobs assigned to them as their intention to work is to earn. Given them lesser pay is tantamount to gender discrimination.

Hi Zandi, In our place if the woman is educated then she will get remuneration equally. But the works which need more physical strength, (for eg. construction works, works in farm etc) then men may get higher remuneration than women. The recruitments are doing according the educational qualifications and there is no difference in remuneration in between male and female. Now the women are equally participating in all fields and ready to take challenges in the work zone.

I am not sure about the pay rates between men and women here in Australia, as I am self employed and have never really worked with women. I believe that pay rates should be on an individual basis, depending on how productive the person is, regardless of their gender. I have worked in a few factory environments in the past where everyone was very secretive about how much they earned. The only ones in these places that shared with me how much they earned per week were the ones that were earning much less than me and complaining about the amount that we earned. I just agreed with them and did not tell them that I was earning more than them!

On my side of the planet i can say that women plays a very important role in economic, political and social areas. We've had 2 lady presidents who have been able enough to withstand criticisms, coup de etats and has dealt with the international community with utmost confidence. I think i can safely say that companies here has more beliefs in women's abilities when it comes to being honest, hard working and and being organized. Not to mention women is less likely susceptible to temptation when it comes to corruption or doing illegal sidelines. But not all , of course (*silly grin*)

Hi Zandi, I believe that we should all be living in a world where your question shouldn't even come to mind? It shouldn't even have a reason why to be asked, let alone comment about it. I find no reason why anyone should think that women are worth less then men or even be treated or paid any less. Women have the brains and all necessary abilities to carry out the same jobs as men, and with this I stringly include Managerial and Administrative jobs, apart from many others. Maybe I am lucky that I come from a country where this is not an issue, although I have to confess that there are still many jobs that are mainly done by men and others mainly by women, but at least that's a choice and not forced upon!! If anyone is able to give out the same amount of work, with the same quality and dedication, then it is not a matter of being male or female, but on one's ability... and maybe also depends on how much one is ready to give!!

Maybe I am a bit nutty for getting so outraged about women issues. Women have not stopped fighting for equality in many parts of the world and has not found success in some. Women get blamed for many things in this society and yet, except for a few strong women leaders in government willing to stick their necks to fight for the rights of women. I come from a family of strong women and supportive men. So it is only natural that I feel strongly about women's issues.
