To hitch or not to hitch? You get someone who made the hop in your car? Not been afraid you may be a dangerous person who can challenge that has you take the money or car? Have you ever done hitchhiking, you were not afraid to get on one in the car to someone who can be a criminal ? If you 're with someone you have more courage? In your country is something normal or you avoid to let strangers to get into your car?

Hah. In New Zealand , 22 years ago: a women hitch hiked and ended up being held captive and being raped throughout a period of 16 years. Her life was wasted and ruined. LOL , does that answer ur question? NEVER HITCH HIKE!

I live in the US and hitch hiking is discouraged by fines. I think that is sad, I would have traveled a bit like some European countries do. Now the only ones that hitch hike are the night people that actually don't want a ride anywhere. Do you live in a hitch hiking country? Are there many crimes from that? I believe the crimes committed is the reason the US now does not allow it.

I do not recommend hitchhiking because it could turn out to be a dangerous ride. Usually it would be safe in my home country there is always an element of risk. I was traveling in Australia at the time a man known as the backpacker murderer was around. I didn't do any hitchhiking there because I was frightened of the possible danger. That criminal killed a couple not just single women. Twice in my life I have done hitchhiking. I was on my way to my accommodation on Moorea Island. The ferry arrived just as the bus departed. So with two guys I hitchhiked to our accommodation. We got a ride in a pickup truck. The sun was strong and one of the guys got sunburn. The other time was in Croatia and it was too far to walk to the national park. I was so grateful to the local person who gave me a ride there and the four Hungarian people that gave me a ride back. I would not give a ride to a hitchhiker. He or she might be a criminal. I wouldn't ever do anymore hitchhiking. I am more careful after I was attacked on a lonely beach in the Maldives. I think if crime happens in paradise then it makes me more aware of safety issues.

Hi Marianna, I've got to say it's the first time I have responded to a discussion AFTER reading all the responses first. It's very sad. When I was a kid, in my teens in the 70's, hitchhiking was fairly common. There wasn't any fear. It was simply a way to get to where you needed to get when you didn't have much money or transportation of your own. My how things have changed! I never really hitched a ride....well....not more from one point of our town to another. My sister, on the other hand, traveled from Kansas City, Missouri in the US to parts of California and then all the way across the US to the east coast by hitching rides on semi's (18 wheeler trucks). She never had any problems. I got my car when I was 16 and used to pick up people all the time, as long as they were going somewhere along my road of travel. I haven't had a car in a while and mostly use public transportation now but I have to say that if I DID have a car, I'd probably pick somebody up. Thing is, you really don't see many people out on the roads trying to get a ride these days like you used to. Everybody's scared.....those who need rides don't hitchhike anymore because of the fear that some crazy person will hurt them in some way and the same can be said for those who might be willing to pick somebody up. At least in the US, the fear of crazy people has been shoved down our throats. Don't trust anybody. Everybody is a potential "killer" or terrorist. I live in Argentina now and hitchhiking has never been a part of the culture here that I'm aware of. I've never seen anybody with their thumb stuck out trying to get a ride. You know....it kinda makes me want to experiment with it here just to see how it would go! lol. I've still got a bit of daredevil spirit in me! lol.

I live in the US and I have never hitchhiked and never would. I also would never pick up anyone along the road. There are to make crazy people in the world today and you really can't trust anyone especially if you are driving all by yourself. People are crazy if they pick up a hitchhiker. They are taking chances that I'm not comfortable doing by no means.

I use to hitchhike all the time when I was a teenager...it was how I got from city to city and area to area (in the big cities)..Would I do it now...well no but thats only because I have no need to...Would I ever pick up a hitchhiker (assumingn I drove which I dont)..I dunno...it would depend on the feeling I'd get from the person or the situation etc for example if I had my kids with me then no I certainly wouldnt...if the person was a creepy looking guy then no I wouldnt..But if I DIDNT have my kids and I DIDNT get a bad gut feeling then ya I just might...

in my country, an unusual thing car owners take / invite someone who is not familiar as passenger in her car ... except if car owner or the driver of car was a male philanderer, of course, he would want to carry a foreign woman who was not known before as passenger

As kids, my brother and I use to hitchhike from the lake back to the house. I have no need to hitchhike now, but if I did, I wouldn't. Too many crazies now... My brother and I, when we were young, but old enough to drive, would pick up hitchhikers. Would I do it today? NO!
