What Do You Do When on Break at Work?

The laws that regulate how breaks are operated and how often they are granted vary state to state in the US, and from country to country. How long are your breaks? Do you get several breaks a day, just a lunch break/bathroom break, or no breaks? How do you spend them? Do you take cigarette breaks even if you aren't a smoker? I haven't worked in a long time. In some jobs that I've worked, we weren't given any actual breaks asides from a quick smoke and using the restroom. Some jobs have offered 1-3 breaks in a day of 10-20 minutes each, while other jobs that I've had granted a luxurious hour long lunch break with two shorter breaks during the day. When I've worked jobs with shorter breaks, I don't leave the premises. However, when I've worked in jobs that allow me an hour, I often will leave for lunch. I've also spent my breaks reading, writing, phone calls/taking are of personal matters, bathing (because I'm a neat freak), even exercising. If I had a job that only offered smoke breaks, I would go out to the smoking area even though I don't smoke. I would take this opportunity to relax, think, and often times stretch and exercise. How about you?

My break time varies from month to month. During break time I usually take a nap no matter what. I get to rest my head too every time I get a break. we dont have lunch break in our company so we really have to be wise in making use of our free time. My favorite part of my job is the break time. I only have a few break time during the day but I love my break time and I always make the best of it.

I am an English teacher and the number of students I have vary from month to month because they can only enrol in the program for a month and may be allowed to re enrol but their schedule could change that's why our schedule also changes. That's the reason why my break time also varies.

When I started work 35 years ago we were allowed 15 minutes in the morning and 15 in the afternoon as a "tea" break. But then they negotiated that away and we just got 30-60 minutes for lunch. When the smoking ban in the workplace legislation came in smokers had to go outside. That caused resentment with the non-smokers as they often had to cover phones etc for colleagues who got up to another hour a day off by going out smoking. Non-smokers weren't allowed the break which I always felt was a bit unfair.

Bathing…in office??? OMG how could that be possible! Our office gives us three breaks in the entire duration of 8hrs of office work. All the breaks are of half hour duration. Our office starts at 10am and then around 11am we get our first break for tea/coffee, then lunch break is between 1:30 to 2pm and again the afternoon tea/coffee break is between 4 to 4:30 pm…office ends at 6pm. Apart from the lunch break, I usually don’t leave my seat for tea/coffee breaks. I am not too fond of either beverage (only take a cup of coffee if feeling drowsy LOL) and I really dislike the burble and gossip that goes on in the canteen during these breaks. Mostly I mylot at my desk…love catching on with the discussions here that I find more interesting than office gossip or go for a short walk around the office premises.

I would wash up in the restroom or go home (since I lived nearby) to take a quick shower.

A short break with a cup of hot aromatic coffee will always revitalize me. Studies have shown that there are certain periods of the day when our enerygy level hits rock bottom. That's when we usually feel fatigue and almost to the point of dozing off. Without caffeine and a short break, I will definitely not make it to the end of the day.

During the hour long lunch break, get some good food of course, at times inside the company but most of the time hitting outside. Then chat with my co-workers about anything. On the two short breaks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, usually grab a coffee in the morning, and smoking area in the afternoon, not to smoke but drink a soda while enjoying some conversations with the smoking buddies.

My working hours is 9 including one hour break for lunch. But, I only use thrity minutes for lunch. So, I can use the rest of the thirty minutes for coffee and tea breaks at work. I also take small breaks from my routine work to browse in order to read news, and work with Mylot. It is not easy to continously concentrate on something for mor than two hours. I take small breaks also to chat with my colleagues.

I haven't worked in a long time, myself. Some of the places where I worked, we got a 10 minute break in the morning and a 10 minute break in the afternoon. I usually spent these breaks getting a snack and something to drink and talking with some of my coworkers. When I worked at Ryan's, which is a local restaurant here in town, I got a 30 minute break and I got to sit down and eat a meal at this break. I didn't get a chance to talk to any of my coworkers, though, because we didn't all go on break at the same time. When I had my bookstore back in the 80s, I would take an hour for lunch. Sometimes I would come home and eat. Sometimes I would go somewhere to get my meal and take it back to the store and eat it. That way, I could still wait on customers. When I worked as a front desk clerk at the motel, we didn't have a lunch break. We would just eat while we worked. We did get a chance to sit down but if any customers came in, we would have to get to work. I worked for daddy off and on years ago in his insurance and real estate office. He was in and out a lot during the day but if he was there, we didn't take any breaks because he didn't believe in them. Whenever he went out, the secretary in charge would let us take a break, lol! Hiya zoey, It seems here that the lunch breaks have changed a bit for most and they don´t have as much time as before. If they have less time they have more money if they have more breaks they get less money. Everything is so upside down that each Company has it´s own Laws now it seems. I have not got a Job but I do take breaks and relax even so.

I don't have breaktimes in my current job. However, I usually do mylotting during times that I have nothing to do. Times when work is done and all I have to do is sit and browse the net, mylot helps a lot. It makes me forget the time and the boring moments at the office.

Last time I working I used to go many smokes break. I do smoke, so I need the break to have a smoke and relax. When I am working on the internet I have breaks too, usually 1 hour of work and 10 mins of a break. Just enough to have a smoke and relax.
