first of all u need to make sure that ur homeowners or renters insurance covers certain dogs...some don't like german shepards, rottweilers or pitts. if ur dog were to attack an innocent bi- standard you could be held liable and you want to make sure ur insurance would cover any unfortunate incidents like that....and if they do cover i would probably get a german shepard just because they have a keen sense and are fast! i had 2 german shepards that used to jump over our 6 ft. fence.... i've also had a lab and they seemed lazier!

Hello Jstrx, I decided to get a dog for security reasons also. We had the opportunity to have a Labrador. I found out that he would bark or growl if he heard noises. But now that he's 6 yrs old (yesterday!!) I would be tempted to step between my fur baby and the attacker .....yeah crazy I know but Ive grown so attached to my dog that I wouldnt want him to be hurt. I have supervision cams around the house and I think this is a much better plan. From afar, you can see a sign to let you know to "SMILE, UR BEING VIDEOD". This I think is a much better plan to keep anyone off my property.

i guess its a good idea to have video cams later coz it myt take a while to install all over the house.. but thanx nonetheless.. hmm. since uv mentioned that labs are alert and bark when they sense someone, i think it will be one of my top pic at the petstore..

I would say that one of the best dogs to get for security would be the German Shepard. Those dogs are very keen and aware, very intelligent, and very strong and powerful. They are pretty fast as well. It is true that the Rottweiler not the fastest dogs for chasing down someone, but when they do get a hold of you they better say their prayers.

Well i suggest you get a German shepherd, they are very alert and smart, and they are normally guard dogs so if you are looking for protection, they should be the ones you need. They are very friendly as well, depending on how you train and treat them.

I agree a german shehard is a good choice, however they are really protective of their family and sometimes not so friendly with any outsiders whatever type of do you get make sure you get some obedienc training and go from there. However I have a 220 pound mastiff, that looks and size and her giant bark are emough to keep people from thinking of getting into my home. Good luck

i have German shephard.they are good overall they are friendly (depends on how you train them) and they are willing to protect you at all cost.. they are intelligent.. best about them is that once they know you(friends and family) they will be friendly even with the kids.. and other option will be Dooberman
