According to the Local Government Association, unwanted phone books create 75,000 tons of waste paper a year. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1254157/Yellow-Pages-clogging-landfills-recycling-bins-consumers-switch-internet.html#ixzz0ghgHYW1a Do you think that yellow pages are essential in today's world where most people use the internet to check for a telephone number?

I think the yellow pages have a few more years of life in them, because we still have an older generation who doesn't use the internet. But, I can see an end to the yellow pages in the next decade (or possibly two). By the way, I still use the yellow pages, because not all businesses have an internet presence.

Maybe it would be phased out in a decade or two as you have suggested. The younger generation seems more technology oriented that the older one for sure.

I read that article in another paper. It's not just Yellow Pages but the domestic directories as well. I have to say that I cannot remember the last time that I looked something up in Yellow Pages. Personally I could live without them. I can access all that I need from the internet. But for older non IT literate folk then I see a continuing need.

Same for me. I prefer to use the internet to search for something than checking with the yellow pages. But as many have said in this thread, the older generation still seem to use it.

That is alot of wasted paper, maybe it should be on a give to only when asked for thing..so that it isn't given to those that don't want it and end up just tossing it out. Just like with some newspapers. They are just read and tossed and some aren't even read before they are tossed. same way with some books.

That is certainly a waste in paper and print! I don't make much use of it as I prefer to search online for whatever I need.

As a business man I had and insertion in Yellow Pages for around 25 years, then about 5 years ago, I pulled it out as I was getting no clients from Yellow Pages at all, most was coming from the Internet and from recommendation from my old clients. I notice that I hardly ever use Yellow Pages now, as a local Internet search produces the results I want, and sometimes even better. Maybe it is time that Yellow pages came to an end, but I have noticed they are very thick now, so perhaps many traders in there are still getting good results. _Derek

I guess that trends change. People are more using the net than the yellow pages or telephone directories.

I am sure that phone books do cost a lot money and paper to produce since you have to list every number and business in the area in there, and that can be quite a few numbers, and I know there are a lot of people who get the phone book, but do not use it they either just throw it away,or use it for burning in the stove, which I think my brother uses his old phone books to burn, and he keeps a big stack of old phone books at least I guess they are old lol,and my family has a phone book that we use from time to time, and I think it would be a whole lot more earth friendly if people went to yellowpages.com and looked for the number, since that is easier, you can type in what you are looking for and go right too it.

It is a pity that most of the phone books end up throw away when one considers the amount of trees being cut down just for paper to be thrown away.

I know it is sad when you think of all the trees that go to waste especially since we are running out of resources, and one day we will be out of trees probably which means humanity will have trouble breathing on our own planet.

Hi ronaldinu, Yes, I think it is essential still to some people, although the internet is here but there are some people who don't have internet and what about the older generation who don't know how to use the computer? I myself had only just learnt how to use it last year and was so afraid of the thing, also I have couple of friends still have not got a computer and don't know how to use it, so I think Yellow pages should be on going thing and we do need it, I use it all the time. I think they are still essential. there are a lot of people out there who do not have computers either because they can not afford them, or because they choose not to own one. My mother and sister are not interested in computers. My grandparents are of a religion where they don't believe in a lot of modern technology. A lot of seniors don't want to get into technology A lot of people don't yet know how to look for numbers on the internet. My American husband was not yet familliar with Canadian phone number lookups until I told him about them. One day when he came up here, he saw the phone book under my couch, and went right to it, when he needed a number. As for myself, I am thinking of starting a business. Knowing that there are still people uninterested in the internet, I will gladly advertize it in the Yellow Pages. also, people with fire places can burn unusuaed phonebooks as opposed to putting them in landfills. Also, they can be sent to recycling centres, to be made into new phonebooks, so that new trees won't be killed.

You've got a very valid point. Not all people are internet friendly.

Yellow pages are really very much unwanted in this times and day now.. UNlike the past, whereby technology is not so advanced, yelow pages is the livelihood ot many others when they are searching for numbers to call for any kinds of emergency etc.. BUt now, even though it's free, i will just chuck it aside, not bothering about it, till the next year when i get a new book again.. haha =D It's just such a waste of papers, and trees!!

Yes it is such a waste. Not only in your country but also in mine. I do wonder why they do keep persisting in publishing them.

Hi, ronaldinu! Wouldn't it be great if they could be printed only for those who want and need them, and maybe for offices? Most of us use computers to get the information we used to go to those directories to find!

That would be a great idea. Companies would save money! And we can do a good service to the environment.

With the way things are going now, one of these days we probably won't need phone books to look up landline phone numbers, nobody will have landline phones anymore. Almost everybody has a cell phone, and alot of them use their cell phones to access the internet, so what would our landline phones be useful for. I know I still have mine, but in all actuality I really don't need it.

Despite having cell phone I still have landline too. My parents make more use of landlines than cellphones. And cell phone rates are much higher than landline in my country.

there are still a lot of people using the yellow pages. those people could be those who have no internet or just wants to use the yellow pages because it is already there when they need it. but if yellow pages will be stopped, i think there are lots of trees that will be saved because paper production will get less.

I think that they should be distributed by order. There are a lot of people that depend on the internet now for phone numbers and locations. I hardly ever use a phone book anymore but I still get one every year. It would definitely save on paper if they give them by request.

Your's is a wise suggestion. I don't know why they dont call or send an application in order to request it.
