Have you ever bought something from a pawn shop?

I have never done this, but I have been comtimplating it recently:
I am looking to buy an electric guitar for myself. I have been playing since I was about 12 or 13, and I accidentally cracked the neck of my first guitar (it was such a gorgeous cream-colored Epiphone!) so I sold it for its parts.
Anyway, I live in a pretty small area and there is only one Guitar Center store, and two music shops (that do not have a great selection of guitars). I went to all of them but found nothing that I liked, I have also been checking Craig's List a couple times a week to see if anyone is selling a guitar I'd want.
There are a couple Pawn shops in my area, and I always see guitars and musical instruments in the windows. I have never actually been in one, but I really want to go in and see the guitars.
Do you think it would be a good idea? Or are Pawn shops really seedy places to shop?

It can't hurt to check it out. I bought a VCR for $14 at the pawn shop about 4 years ago and I'm still using it.
If you don't like anything than don't buy it but it won't hurt to check it out.

My Dad asked me to go to a pawn shop with him once. He wanted to buy an older type of camera for his wife. (She couldn't figure out the newer technology, so that was his answer for it because she loved this one camera they didn't make anymore.) It turned out to be a swell camera, and I didn't think the price was too high considering they don't make it anymore. The guy we dealt with was nice, and extremely patient with my elderly father. He showed me how to work it, what film it needed, and was so helpful. It changed my opinion on pawn shops lol. I used to think they were seedy too:-)
If you do go to look for guitars there, make sure you check it over good, and ask if you can play something (so you can get the feel of it...if you play already, then you know whether it's right or not.) I asked price on a few cameras before I asked to see a certain one, and looked over a few. My theory is: just like a used car dealer, they know if they've got a bite, so it's not good to be overly enthusiastic over one, especially if the price isn't shown lol. I'd also do a search on the net to see what that particular guitar has been selling for elsewhere. It helps to know a reasonable roundabout figure, and knowing that might help you get a lower price from him. Good luck! While I probably wouldn't take something TO a pawn shop, I've known others to get a good deal there.

In our place, pawnshops only accept things that are very expensive like gold bracelets, jewelries, and high-end gadgets like cellphones and PSPs. Anyway, I'd be in that pawnshop if I were you, I like checking out used stuff, especially ones that are sold cheaper yet are of good quality but of course, that's for you to check first. You know what you want and you know your stuff well so buy only if it meets your criteria.

I have brought rings from a pawn shop.
My son bought a guitar from one, he
still has it and it is a good one. I
also have another son who has brought
TVs from the pawn shop. We have not
had any problems. I think it would
be worth checking out.

hi! yes, i have bought things from pawn shops and the last thing was my mobile phone, which was pretty new and I took it with 50% reduction from the price in other stores for second hand technics. I also buy some gadgets from shop like that, for example a reading lamp, some books also and other interesting things!

Most pawn shops are usually decent places, but I can't speak for you as I haven't seen them.
Ask if you can inspect and try out what you're looking to purchase. Always try something like that before you buy it, and check their return policy, if they have one at all.
You may also be able to haggle a lower price.
There is nothing wrong with Craiglist as long as you're careful. Ask to see and try out the guitar in question before you even consider buying it. Bring a friend if you're not sure. If you know what you're looking for, you can usually avoid any people trying to deceive you. Again always try before you buy, and if it seems too good to be true, it usually is.
Good luck :)
