Should "We Are the World" Have Been Remade?

I must admit to some surprise when I heard there was a bit of controversy surrounding the new version of "We Are the World" which was recently recorded for Haiti earthquake victims. To ME the original version, recorded in 1985, was the best but that's only because most of the artists involved back then were my favorites while I'd never heard of half of those who were in the new one. The rap and auto-tune(?) parts of the new recording sounded odd to me at first but I could understand it's a new generation and they wanted to update the sound a bit. What surprised me hearing that JayZee had said this remake should never have been made, that the original should never have been "touched". What do you think? I tend to feel it was the thought that counted and the new song has raised a great deal of money for the earthquake victims. The original artists were mostly all baby-boomers like me; I guess it was time for the younger generation to have their turn, right? Annie

I haven't heard the remake, and I probably should before gauging an opinion. But I'll give my opinion anyway, lol. I see this as a problem with the music industry as a whole. Rather than remaking a classic song, why can they not use their own brains and write a new song. It's much the same way I felt when Elton John and Bernie Taupin reworked "Candle in the Wind" for Princess Dianna. Why do you not just write a new song? The original was great, obviously. Do they not feel that they can write something just as great? It is very disappointing to me.

I think it's lazy. Even in movies, there seems to be very little original thought amoung today's "writers." It's rather annoying. But I will listen to the remake.

Excellent point, Cyn! Back when they decided to do "We Are the World" nobody thought about using someone else's old song, they just got busy and wrote their own, and it didn't take them long either. Are today's artists less talented or just lazier? Annie

Its funny you started this discussion because for some reason its all Ive heard about since I woke up this morning. It was on the news, yahoo, and now myLot. I hadnt heard the song so before I answered your discussion I listened to it. I was a teen in the eighties. WE ARE THE WORLD,Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Lionel Richie were all popular back then. That song was the best. When It was debuted, the entire country aired it together. Country music stations, gospel, classical, and all others played it at the same time. This remake should've never happened. It could never live up to the first. Michael Jackson wasnt in it. That was the icing on the cake. The remake didnt have it. It would've taken a miracle to make the remake better than the first. Dont get me wrong it was a nice try but they should've left the song as a USA for AFRICA plea. I dont think it did anything for Haiti. There is only one WE ARE THE WORLD. They shouldnt have remade it. When Michael Jackson passed it was a tremendous loss for the music industry. It was also the end of any chance of recreating a WE ARE THE WORLD that could surpass the first. dl

You're so right, it was an EVENT when the original was debuted. Every single artist was a "superstar" in their own right and every type of music was represented. To me one big difference between that group and the new one is when the first one was made made EVERYONE knew who they all were. At the time my daughter was about 15 and I can say she knew them all, I knew them all and my mother knew them all. Maybe it's just me, but I don't see today's group being popular with three generations! Annie

No one made a big deal about the remake. If anything its been the butt of many jokes. Michael Jackson made WE ARE THE WORLD. Without him there's no remake. Im sorry but the man was, is, and always will be a legend. dl

I heard the new version of "We Are the World" but I liked the original so much better. I think the problem with the newer version that there are just to many people singing and I didn't like the rap part of the song at all. The original version had only about 42 or so artists this on had about 82. It just to me sounded horrible. I wonder if Michael Jackson was rolling over in his grave.

I didn't care for the rap part either but I thought that was just because I'm an old fogey...lol! I agree about there being too many people singing. Annie

I heard the original song and the remake also, and I have to say I was a child in the 80's it doesn't have anything to do with if you are of the new generation or not, I am 28 years old and I still think than the original was the best, the rap part of the song in my opinion was horrible, there are things that doesn't mix together. I think the performances of Barbara Streisand, Celine Dion and Fergie were impeccable, but the song was let down by the rap part, I still think that they should have made a different song, art in general reflects historical moments in the history of the world, so we can't say that it is that both circumstances are the same.

You're right - Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion and Fergie WERE fantastic but I think they were practically the only ones I knew. Annie

hi! as Lenin123 has told, the original is really the top and I think the song should not be remade, just because in memoriam of Michael. He really was a great singer and I don't like when some one tries to earn some "dirty" money making remixes of great songs, which author can defend himself!

At least nobody is earning money for themselves form the song since it's all going to Haiti earthquake relief but I know what you mean. Annie

This was featured on a Saturday Night Live spoof because it was done to what most people thought was very poorly. I personally have to say that the remixers chose a pretty terrible assortment of people, the worst picks being Justin Bieber and Randy Jackson. It would have been better with Seth Putnam, in my strange opinion. I did however like how the production included Fergie, P!nk, Lil' Wayne, and Snoop Dogg.

Hey annie! I kind of also have mixed feelings about this too! I was a bit upset that a remake was done at first. I think that the Original should never have been tampered with, but it was done for a good cause so I do understand to an extent! But, what I don't understand is JayZ's comment! These are his artists that he works with so why the negativity? I happen to like rap and I like auto-tune even though I am a "Boomer"! I just love the new music too! And I love JayZ! You can't compare the two different versions! They are totally different! The Original will always be what it is and no one can take that away! The remake is just that, a remake made to help Haiti using more current young artists known to this generation (and Boom Rapper me)!

I like the song but I dont like the RAP part. Its not because I hate RAP, I just think that its not appropriate to include it on this kind of song because the originality and formality of it was damaged. They should sing the song on its original format so there is lesser criticism on it.
