Is Mexico City a safe place to visit or live in?

I currently have job opportunities in Mexico City but some of the Drug Cartel News about Mexico is getting to me. However, most of the things I have read in the Internet about Mexico isn't that alarming as what has been said in the news which is why I am asking the help of my fellow mylotters about what they think. It will also be of big help to me if someone who already went there will enlighten me and give me travel tips. Thanks in advance to those who will respond.

I have visited Mexico and think it is a lovely country. I haven't yet been to Mexico City but one of my friends has and she really likes it. I would imagine it is as dangerous as other cities in Central America. I would suggest staying in the safer areas. I know that it would be wise to have money belt to put valuables in. I would suggest you get back to your accommodation before dark. I am an experienced traveler and I have visited some dangerous cities. I have walked in Los Angeles after dark and I got back to my accommodation safely. You could live and work in Mexico City and travel to some other places in wonderful Mexico when you get the time.

Thanks Maximax. Thanks for the tip. However, I think I'm going to skip Mexico because I have been hearing a lot of stories about the lawlessness in the country and it scares me a lot. Maybe I'll visit if the stories improve.
