Are there rules in advertising your business in blogs or websites?

Hi there fellas, I am quite new to the internet marketing stuff but I would just like to know if there are any rules regarding advertising your own business or your friend's business in your own blog or website? What are the do's and don'ts in advertising? Are there any permits I need to secure in my place or none at all?
