Speakers Not Working Now! :-(

Some of my fellow Lotters realise that my desktop computer is very old...nearly 10 years old to be precise. There are seperate speakers that sit each side of the TFT monitor. One cable from a speaker plugs into the rear of the tower unit and the other one comes out the back and connects to the second speaker. To my dismay I have noticed that the little green light on speaker one isn't glowing like it would normally. I checked to see if I had switched it on and I have done so then I checked the connections...nothing untoward there. So, my friends, have my speakers finally given up working or is there something else I can try to bring them back to life?! If not - more importantly, can they be replaced?

Do they unplug from the computer or are they attached?

Speakers are cheap these days luckily so it does not matter too much if your old ones fail you. People give them away over here. There are always speakers to be found for free and for virtually nothing at garage sales around here. I think I even ave a spare set somewhere. You can come over and get them if you want!

Yes, keeping a positive attitude through difficult times can be hard, but it is the best way to move forward and for opportunities to open up.

I tell you something, after the day I've had today I feel like getting on the first plane out of here to Australia so don't tempt me please! We have an airport but it just deals with freight which is annoying to the core...it's like they don't want us to leave or something! Got another rejection letter today by the way but I still haven't heard about the Woodlands job..you know what they say, these things come in threes! Haha! I gotta laugh about it, it's the only way!

Looks like you got to replace them my friend,, You should be happy it last that long...I think its time to get your cash out and buy a new one..Speakers today are not so expensive... You should also try to save some money,,to bought a new desktop computer... Its almost 10 years and its beyond its lifetime..You should do these in order to prevent loss in your data and files.. Thanks for that my friend. When funds allow I will definitely buy another computer. I like your avatar by the way. It appeals to me as I use Firefox, it has revitalised my machine with the addons (I don't have many for obvious reasons) so I'm glad I've discovered it.

Replacing speakers is fairly inexpencive. Well here in the states. And, they aren't designed to last all that long. The fact they broke down now proves how strong they are. One way to tell though if any power is coming from the speaker is to turn up the volume as high as it would go. If its working at all you should hear static coming from the speakers. Quite frankly, I would first replace the speakers. Because it sounds to me that despite them being plugged in correctly, they are no longer receiving power which can prove to be quite a problem.

Thanks for that informative response, it's much appreciated. Yes, I know what you mean about the static. This has happened before as I have ALWAYS been able to hear static when the volume was turned up high...nothing this time though, unfortunately. I think a new pair of speakers may be in order!

Where is the power input ? Electricity can't come from your sound card : it's time to buy new batteries for speaker one ;)

Hello! My apologies for not replying sooner (I've had one of those days lol). Well, the speakers are connected to my tower unit and one of the speakers has a little push button on it so BOTH speakers then switch on..but nothing. My hubby will be home soon so he will take a closer look at them. They definitely don't run on batteries though although my wireless keyboard and mouse do (not originals) so I would love wireless versions!

hi janey ! Sorry for the joke about the power input. Before investing a few bucks in new speakers, try to plug a stereo headset at your tower in the speakers plug and play some music. If it doesn't work the problem comes from your sound card, not from your speakers.

I think you could be right there! They might just want to have a sleep, which is what I should be doing. Any subsequent Lotters who reply, I'm off to bed now but I PROMISE I will comment later on today. Many thanks in advance.
