Would you give away your child due to superstition?

I just heard from my boyfriend that, he has an aunt who is separate with her twin sister at birth. WHY? because his twin aunts are born of the year of the tiger. And according to a saying in Chinese (???????), translated to English "A mountain cannot contain 2 tigers", which meant that 2 tigers cannot be in the same territory. His grandaunt believes that saying and gave the other twin away... luckily to another relative, where they still keep in contact with each other.. I see no logic in this. What do you think?

How do you pick which one to keep? How do you explain to the children that I gave you away to family because I was told to do so by superstition? That is insane. The torment these children will have once the truth is let out of the bag. I am reading and just cannot believe it. I know you are suppose to respect tradition and cultures but this one I will pass on. Sorry if everyone gets mad. These twins are missing something, each other...

I have no idea how she make her decision! I hear about this because it was the Chinese New Year last month. It is part of tradition to have a reunion which is logical and I will follow. It is in that reunion that the relatives, and my boyfriend's aunts met and catch up with each other. I can't imagine if that grandaunt gave her child away to a stranger instead? Won't she lose her child forever...

Yeah i have a friend that was in a similar situation (not a twin-but given to family member) and she is a mess. Did great in school, honors. Understands why it happened and all. She cannot kick the feeling of not being able to live with her parents and that they just gave her away to another family member to raise her as their own perse. She lost so much that to this day she has a void that has ruined relationships, trust, and second guesses her self and ability to do things that she knows she can do, ( second guesses) but not in front of people. She needs no one and will not depend on none. She has left her family as she knew it behind her. You can see her pain if you are with her long enough... It's sad in what people do and not think about the ramifications of their actions and the long term effect it will have on another person let alone themselves. Funny things is therapy and meds if needed cannot help you if you do not let go of what has happened to you and accept the things that you had no control over. Would that pain be worth a superstition? Its hard and I would not want to be in her shoes.

Well, it's safer to believe than to regret it.. There will be reasons as to why they do it.. What if the saying is true, a Mountain really cant have 2 tigers?? Will the 2 sisters be killing each other, or they simply cant get along since young?? hehe ^_^ So i guess your bf's aunt is right in doing that, for she might be avoiding a diaster?? hehe

Oh my god... You are not serious, are you? Avoiding a disaster? We are talking about humans here, not tigers. Even if the twins don't get along since young, there is still no reason to keep them apart! We being humans, adapt to the environment. We people change. I don't believe there will be a disaster. There can never be lasting anger between family, let alone twins, after all they are all connected by blood. I have to admit there might be occasional disagreements but who doesn't? Unless it's foretold that one of them would die if they are kept together, then i might understand. just because their zodiac is tigers is apparently ridiculous. Sorry, I don't agree with you on this account.

i still can't understand the olden days... no rhythm or reason sometimes. My grandma was just being angry with me because I wore black yesterday while we gathered to celebrate her birthday! I prefer the "now" and i agree with using education to teach and guide our younger generation.

That will be common if one is still in the olden days.. BUt in this present day and time, who cares so much about all these superstitions right?? haha =D If really, my child are both borned like that, then it's up to us, parent's responsibility to teach them well, and make sure they get along.. hehe

Even I don't see any logic in this superstition... Jeez!!! How can a Mother part with her new-born kid? Good Heavens!!! This is heart aching... The chinese saying is good, but I am sure they don't want us to follow it word by word... I wonder, when superstitions are going to leave us safe and happy???

The thing is that people know that these superstitions are false and yet they fall prey to it, because of the weakness of human mind. I don't know if there is any logic in any superstition! I may sound stupid, but I really didn't understand the example of spring cleaning, that you've put here...

Some people believe that cleaning the house, clearing or throwing away some of the redundant stuff you have at home will meant or symbolize "throwing away" the bad luck or bad "stuff" that you may have "collected" unintentionally over the past year. Psychologically, this is right as cleaning up your space might make you feel better, in turn makes you feel good about yourself. Which will result you being positive in things you do. But all this is in the mind. Let me see if I can find a link to an example of this online.

I don't think superstitions are going to leave us... They will be bond to have some logical ones that would survive the generations... Like for example, spring cleaning before the year ends would bring good luck in the coming year.

A mountain cannot hold 2 tigers refers to 2 people cannot be living together as it will cause commotion, quarrelling and etc. As for twin sister's case, it is truly illogical. However, I have a relative such that both the husband and wife are born in the year of tiger and they are living as usual. For real-life, I have not seen 2 tigers living in the same mountain before, has anybody seen that?

You will not be able to see wild animals in Bali's volcano. If you want to see wild animals, you have to go Japan, Switzerland, New Zealand and other places. Japan will have Bears, Deers, etc.Switzerland will also have Deer, Snow Mountains and Tigers.

Great! Real life examples of 2 people of the tiger zodiac living fine together, getting along well... Real life tigers?? nope, definitely not me... I have not been to a mountain before.. Have tried climbing a volcano in Bali once, but no wild animals there..

It's ridiculous that one could abandon his or her child only for a superstitious saying. I'm a Chinese and i know about that saying. "a mountain cannot contain two tigers" indicates that two persons born in the same tiger year have to fight against each other in order to be the sole dominator. Some people believe this saying. But when it comes to serious issues like abandoning children, no one ever believes it. So it really surprised me that someone could abandon his child only for a stupid saying.

apparently, my boyfriend's great grandaunt believes it. I still can't imagine the mother's feeling of giving her child away. I wonder how she feels then... it sure is stupid and naive.

Of course not, that is just ridiculous. In my country, we have superstitions but I never reached to the point that I would do something really stupid just because of it. I have my own ideas about things and superstitions are just stupid for me, not even one superstition proved right, all non sense. I definitely know how to analyze stuff and tell what is right or wrong. That is just so stupid at all!

apparently, self beliefs are not encouraged back in those days. Like how men have the right to do things over women in the past. Luckily, those beliefs are dying off.

Hi, ksherrie. That is so crazy and sad on the twins. They are sisters and they should get to be around each other. Bunk a Chinese tiger!.. I guess I am very incompatible with other people. But, I bet that I have lived around them... I wonder if me and my mother-in-law should be separated as well??? Because this women irks the living daylight out of my freaking nerves! These sisters deserve a chance to be around each other. They are both grown adults and they need to see each other more. What your aunt has done is very sad, and so many years have been lost through the twins. They can't get these years back.. Hopefully, they will be reunited to finish up the rest of their years together.

You don't have to worry. They still meet up but not as often as how a normal sisters should be. Only on reunions and family gatherings. They sure can't return to those years where they lose while growing up, especially they are twins... I think they bound to lose some bond between them. I wonder if they still look the same...

No, and never would i'll give my child because of some sort of superstitious belief, I only believe in one God and I believe that children are made by God and so must be taken care of by parents and not to be given away with somebody else.

You are right. God will not give you a child if you are not worthy of it... I can only say, people and beliefs of those days are can be quite scary...

i didnt see any logic about it also besides they are not tiger at all as they are human, if talking about the sign then i guess that stupid. the problem with superstitious is that it can kill people and so its better of not to believe any but yourself. why not rust god instead than to trust those saying who only created by human, i feel so sorry for the twin, if im the mother then what the heck is that sign for as my children are human being given by god so only god knows about their future.

Basically! These type of hearsay can only be used as a reference but never a belief... But for the older generations of Chinese, they believe in zodiacs... Each year, each month and each hour is a different animal. Similar to horoscopes. Luckily this type of tradition is dying out.. Otherwise my generation has lots to follow..

This is utterly ridiculous! Give your child away for a baseless belief? I am not an ideal mother but giving away my child to other people (while I am strong enough and still has the capability to find ways to support him/her and provide for his/her needs) for whatever reason is out of the question. I may only concede to this idea if I no longer have the capacity to make them survive in life.

Well said! That grandaunt is healthy as an ox when she gave her twin girl away. Luckily illogical chinese traditions are dying out... I won't give my baby away. I would rather not give birth in the first place if I do not have the ability to take care of her.

I think this is unbelievably stupid. How can you give away your own child, just because a local saying tells something that could mean it. Come on there is not scientific proof that because saying tell so it will happen, if the woman was a smart and wise, loving mother she would have never done such a thing, I mean how could she choose between one or the other twin, there was a saying that also told her who to choose, and what can the twin that had been given away think about her own mother??

I know what you mean! I can't totally blame on this.. It's our generation that brings about this type of hearsay... Women in the chinese society then wasn't suppose to be educated.
