I've heard that Florence is amazing and quaint, although apparently Milan is the place to be for shopping.

I would say Rome or Milan for shopping but for a fabulous trip go to the Amafi Coast of Italy. Positano and Amalfi are simply devine.

I agree with what everyone has already advised you - also try and take in somewhere like Lucca or even maybe Naples. Italy is such a diverse country as each city has soemthing to offer travellers and there are so many things to do and see!

When I went we did Rome, Florence and Venice. All of which had so much to offer. Venice is nothing short of amazing and for culture and history you won't get much better then Rome ! These places are are within reasonable traveling distance to one another. I would have loved to see milan and sicily but they were for far apart. We flew into Rome, stayed 4 days, took a train to florence for 3 days and then a train to Venice for 4 days and flew home from venice.

If you are planning a trip to Italy then you must try and fit in Rome, Florence and Venice. Those are for starters then there is Verona, Ascoli Piceno and Pisa. There are many others all over Italy but without knowing the lengt5h of your visit, those are the places I would suggest. Will you be staying long and how will you be moving around or will you be staying ib one place? It is very easy and cheap to travel by train here and if you start off in one city you could quite easily travel to the others too if you are going to be staying at least a week.
