Has The Winter Dragged On This Year? Has It Been Colder Or Warmer?

Here in the UK (especially Scotland and the North East of England) there has been lots of snow this winter. It started off quite promising as October was unseasonably mild. However, it all went downhill after that and this winter has really dragged on. Recently, it's actually been sunny but it's the night-time that I'm a bit fed up with now. Overnight temperatures are still hovering over the freezing mark which we're not used to as - for the past 10 years or so, it's usually really mild by now. The layers of clothing are getting on my nerves too. So, is there any end in sight to winter where you are or does the snow just keep on coming? Hopefully, if I get enough responses we might be able to figure out if Global Warming is happening...or not.

hi! here in my area the winter was and it is still colder than the last year and there were and still is more snow. few days ago the weather was really good about 20 degrees, the birds were singing and all the things that are common for the spring, but 2 days ago it began snowing and it doesn't stop, it snows already two days and even now it is snowing. it is 9th of March, but it looks like January! the climate goes really "crazy" and I think it is a cause from the Global warming!

Oh my those birds won't know what to do will they? I feel so sorry for animals in that situation. Hedgehogs in this country have been known to wake up much earlier than they usually do; then they are subjected to colder weather after they wake up, making it more difficult to survive. However, I don't think it is warm enough for them to wake up yet. I'd love to be able to sleep through the whole of the winter, that would be great! I hope the weather sorts itself out soon my friend. You could be right about the Global Warming thing but I don't think anyone knows this 100%. However, we ignore it at our peril don't we?

yes, we ignore it all the time, and this is the reason why it is getting worse and worse! hope the birds will be OK!

Awww Janey, Im SO sorry you're having all that snow and cold weather!! Ok I'll admit, Im grinning now haha!! Hey cant blame me, can you.....Im in Canada and we usually have our share of snow and cold but this year, we decided to be nice to everyone and give away our snow to our neighbors to the south and across the pond also. haha.....sorry I cant stop laughing haha!! Ok so Ive stopped giggling now.....we have a few patches of snow left here and there, not much, will probably have all melted by the end of the day. We didnt get much. They say its a record!! Its also quite warm here now. Also a record. I dont care, I dont mind it at all. I love global warming if thats what is is. Bring it on I say!! The birds are chirping, I think the trees will be blooming very soon. Ive seen a few flies (annoying) but yup, looks like spring is here early and me a happy camper . Cheer up, it'll be back to normal next year for you guys!! I need to come up with a new "give away snow dance" for next year!!

Maybe it should worry me but it doesnt. We had about 20 feet of snow a few years back and that was awful as we didnt know where to put it anymore lol. Now too much can also kill trees. We lost 2 that spring. Its not the first time that we dont have much snow. I remember when I was a teenager.....we had a green xmas. So Im sure it has nothing to do with what they call global warming. They made this up only to find a way to get more money out of our pockets.

I really don’t know how much is true about this global warming thing and how much of it is hype but the past year has been unusually high for us both in summer and winter. As it is India is a summer country and we have high scorching heat but last year in my city it was the highest temperature of the decade. Same for the winter…it was probably the coldest in decades and it came much before its time and the duration was more than usual too! This year too the forecast for summer is higher temperature than previous year…don’t know about winter yet but then we are having extremes of both summer and winter…do you think that’s coz of global warming?

I really don't know my friend as I am not an expert on the subject. That's the trouble though isn't it? Scientists all over the world cannot agree on what Global Warming is never mind whether it's happening or not. I think these Scientists should do a worldwide survey and ask the PEOPLE what they are experiencing instead of using computer models to try to figure it out for them. I should imagine a Scientist who WANTS to believe in Global Warming will tap in data ensuring that computers will reflect what he believes but it can work the other way too, that is why there is so much disagreement now. In any event, there's something going on; whether it's just a natural progression in the climate I've no idea. I hope the weather improves for you very soon (and for everyone else) of course. Thanks for your response.

It sure seemed to drag on for Me here in N.Ireland..My Oil central heating was on the Fritz most of December and into January-seems the Maintenance guy didn't want to come out from his house,it was so cold!..just as well I have an open fire that kept me going til it was fixed..The grass outside is still frosted here at night for now..

I Live in a small Village, with fields belonging to a neighbouring farm up the hill behind my house that are filled with Lambing sheep at the moment..I'm close to the Border with Donegal (10 Minutes drive),and the Atlantic coast is only about 40 minutes from Here by car..It got fairly sub-zero around here earlier in the winter..It's been unusual as it's only warmed up enough at night here to rain ONCE since this cold spell hit! Yep,it's the rain that keeps it green here!

Oh wow, I think you're the first person I've "chatted" to from Northern Ireland! Thanks for responding my friend and I hope it warms up very soon where you are. Do you live in the countryside? Is it as cold there as in southern Ireland as I've been to Dublin in AUGUST and it was freezing then. It kept raining too! I suppose that's why Ireland is so green isn't it?

Except for a couple of really cold days, ie below freezing, I'd say it has been warmer than normal here. Either that or my blood is thickening...

Well from someone down south where it’s been a little warmer I will happily swap. I love winter, cold nights, crispy air and snow even though it usually forces me to remain even more house bound than normal. Compared to the last 10 years I suppose this winter does appear to have dragged on, but then I remember with fondness the winters from childhood which went on much longer and so I quite like the return to a proper wintery season. I do wonder if this is the start of 10 years of proper winters so to speak before we then get another shift back to warmer winters.

Thanks for your response. I would be very surprised if we don't have a milder winter for the next few years and then we will want the colder weather back so we can get out in the snow and kids can play in it. I remember winters being much colder than we have been used to in the last few years, so this year is how it should be in my opinion. I too like cold, crispy air and the snow when it has just fallen. I can't stand the slushy stuff so I was pleased when that went a few weeks ago!

Hi Janey, I am fed up with it too, I am in Sussex and while we are experiencing a few days of sunshine but it will al change to rain, yes, it is still very cold and its icy first thing in the morning, can't wait for the spring, why they call it global warming when its freezing cold. Tamara

The winter seems to be ending now, 5 degrees plus and ice everywhere. Quite disgusting really. We haven't had a lot of snow this year, Southern Norway has had a lot though, much more than usual. They're having problems in the west too, and the North has been really cold, but we've had a quite nice winter. The coldest day for 50 years was a couple of weeks ago, but I'll take -20, white snow and blue skies before 0 degrees and slush any day. As for global warming, it hasn't been warmer, but there's been som extreme weather here and there.

Wow, -20 with blue sky. Fabulous! Here in Carlisle we got to a -14 one night in January which was the coldest place in the UK on that particular night. That's when our pipes froze! That month we had snow on the ground for days and ice was a major problem nationwide. You lot in Norway would probably laugh at us moaning all the time!

in the united states, or at least the east coast, we've been having abnormal snowing as well. school closed for 1 week because of the latest snowfall we've had, and you can still see the snow piles on the curbs even in march. i'm not sure about anywhere else though. funny to see the snow is high in Europe too.

It was interesting in Vancouver, Canada wasn't it during the Winter Olympics as there wasn't much snow falling during the first week...and yet in the US they had loads, probably in the areas you mentioned. Thanks for your response my friend and welcome to MyLot!
